Increased water availability will minimize over utilization of grasses and browse by wildlife, as well as allow other possibly over-utilized areas some rest. In other words, increasing water distribution will improve habitat conditions in this portion of Unit 4B. This project will provide a permanent water source for wildlife. In addition, this project will provide opportunities to place more drinkers to the north on private lands (again, an area deficient in permanent water). PROJECT OBJECTIVES: Increasing water distribution and availability will improve habitat conditions which may lead to higher recruitment (and better distribution) for wildlife, particularly mule deer, elk and pronghorn. Monti Hancock, livestock permittee, has been a long time participant with the Show Low and Winslow HPC’s. Monti has received very little funding to date. If funded, this project will improve landowner relations (an HPC goal) by keeping Mr. Hancock engaged in this important department program. PROJECT STRATEGIES: The strategy is to utilize an existing well to improve water distribution. This would be done by adding one water storage tank, one mile of pipeline and installing two water drinkers, which will provide two permanent sources of water for wildlife. PROJECT LOCATION: This project will be in the west portion of GMU 4B, on the Park Day Allotment which is owned by Monti Hancock (map attached to end of this document); area is near Hwy 377 about 10 miles north of Heber. Township 13North, Range 18East, Sections 8 & 9 LAND OWNERSHIP AT PROJECT SITE (Please state specifically if PRIVATE PROPERTY and provide landowner’s name): Apache Sitgreaves National Forest – Black Mesa Ranger District IF PRIVATE PROPERTY, IS THERE A STEWARDSHIP AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE LANDOWNER AND THE DEPARTMENT? N/A HABITAT DESCRIPTION: Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands intermixed with large grassland openings. The elevation is about 5,800 feet. Habitat Enhancement Project Proposal Game/Development Branch Page 3 ITEMIZED USE OF FUNDS: The AGFD through HPC will provide funds to purchase a submersible water pump and pay for some of the labor. The permittee, Monti Hancock, will provide labor and pay for a water tank. The Forest Service will pay for the pipe and archaeological surveys (NEPA is complete). SBGT Funds: $4,000.00 = submersible water pump and some of the labor Forest Service: $3,000.00 = poly pipe, arch surveys and NEPA (completed) Monti Hancock: $1,600.00 = 5,000 gallon water tank and labor LIST COOPERATORS AND DESCRIBE POTENTIAL PARTICIPATION: The permittee, Monti Hancock, will handle all purchases and labor for the project. The forest service has agreed (verbally at July 24, 2008 HPC meeting) to complete archaeological surveys. Wildlife Managers Bob Birkeland and Evan Lautzenheiser will coordinate the project. PROJECT MONITORING PLAN: AGFD Wildlife Managers will continue to gather population information through annual surveys for this area. Trends in movement and numbers will be detected by these annual wildlife surveys. PROJECT MAINTENANCE: Maintenance will be the permittee’s responsibility; AGFD WM’s will make sure the drinkers are functioning and water is available for wildlife.
