How is the House League Program Run
The Gateway program is run like the entire community club is run; with lots of help from volunteers. Gateway
Recreation Centre is a not-for-profit organization and it couldn’t be run without volunteers helping in every aspect
of every program. The Hockey program is run by volunteer directors, conveners, coaches, managers, etc. Each
parent in the house league program is responsible for assisting during the Gateway Carnival tournament. Usually it
is a one hour commitment selling 50/50 tickets.
The season starts with each player participating in the REMHA development camp for 7 and under players and 8
year olds that have never played before, which is included in your registration cost. The camp runs for
approximately 6 weeks with one session per week focused on fundamental skills like skating.
House League Teams are formed by assigning coaches to each team that is formed based on the player registration
numbers. Evaluation sessions will be held in October and the coaches and convener will hold a draft to create the
teams so that each Gateway team within a division has the same level of talent. For those 8 year olds that do not
make a REMHA 8A1 will play on a 7&8 house league team, they will attend the 7&8 house league evaulations.
Once the teams are formed the head coach from each team will solicit a volunteer team Manager (possibly 2) from
the parents of the players. The manager(s) are responsible for team communications, handling the financial
transactions of the team, and coordination of fund-raiser activities like holding 50/50 draws at home games. Each
team is run like its own club.
What is the actual cost?
The registrations fees you when you register your child for hockey are only one component to consider in the overall
cost of having your child play hockey. Registration Fees cover: club administration fees, association membership
fees (River East Minor Hockey Association, Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association), game ice and referee fees
(7&8’s and up).
Other costs will include:
 Practice Ice Fees – Each team will practice approximately 1.25 times per week starting in mid-October and
will be responsible for half the ice fee (2 teams practice half ice during each 1 hour slot. Teams will
practice for approximately 18 weeks (18 weeks x 1.25 (Average Ice per week) x.5 (half ice per team) x
$198.50 (ice fee per 1hr slot) / 11 minimum players ) = approximately $205/player
 Gateway Tournament Registration – each Gateway House League team will be registered in the Gateway
Hosted Winter Carnival Tournament and is required to pay the tournament registration fees.
Approximately $440/team for the 6 & Under division and $540/team for the 7&8 division. That works out
to $40 or $50 per player respectively.
 Other optional tournament registrations would work out to about the same amount per tournament. Expect
an additional 1 or 2 more tournaments in the year.
 Player Equipment can range from about $200 - $400 new (see list below).
