THE EU SUPPORTING TURKEY IN PRODUCING
BETTER QUALITY AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS
Turkish institutions and agricultural stakeholders have benefitted from an EUfunded project to improve agricultural statistics. The regular delivery of
accurate data will help inform stakeholders in increasingly competitive
agricultural markets.
On the occasion of the project's closing ceremony, Mr. Michele Villani, Head of the Economy,
Trade and Agriculture Section at the EU Delegation to Turkey said: "Today we celebrate the
successful completion of a project that has helped to improve the quality of statistical data
provided by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MoFAL)."
"The project brought greater uniformity with statistical methodologies in the EU, thereby
allowing better, more up to date, comparison of production data for a variety of crop products at
provincial and national level. This will benefit the MoFAL and the Turkish Statistics Institute
alike and will serve to inform policy-makers and stakeholders across the agricultural sector."
The project, "Technical Assistance and Data Collection for Strengthening the Statistical
Capacity of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock" was conducted over seventeen
months up to May 2012 and it's purpose was to improve the quality of statistical data provided
by MoFAL by means of introducing new methodologies on early estimation of yield and
improving knowledge of staff on survey design and collection of more reliable data in line with
EU methods.
Experts from a consortium, lead by Vialto Consulting Ltd, worked closely with Turkish officials
to help develop statistical practices suited to local needs. More specifically, the project
activities included:

Modification of the organisational structure for agricultural statistics

Training of Ministry staff on EU agricultural statistics methodologies

Development of improved methods for early estimation for wheat and maize

Improving the method of counting olive trees using satellite imagery
The project's closing ceremony will be held on Tuesday 29 May at the Ministry of Food,
Agriculture and Livestock. It will be attended by Mr. Michele Villani, Head of the
Economy, Trade and Agriculture Section of the EU Delegation to Turkey and Mr. Gursel
Kusek, General Director of DG Agricultural Reform of the Ministry of Food Agriculture
and Livestock.
