The Taxman Isn’t Calling Rockford Man Arrested for Alleged Role in Medicare Fraud Scheme $2.2 Billion Johnson & Johnson Settlement Has Illinois Ties ACA Scams Targeting Medicare Beneficiaries Make the News The Sunday, November 10th issue of The New York Times featured an article titled “Con Men Prey on Confusion Over Health Care Act” by Jessica Silver-Greenberg and Susanne Craig. Read the full article online: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/10/business/con-men-prey-onconfusion-over-health-care-act.html As the article points out, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) does not require Medicare beneficiaries to change anything about their coverage. Some scam artists are trying to use the Affordable Care Act to convince Medicare beneficiaries to give up their personal information, including Medicare numbers. If you or a loved one receives a call, visit, or anything that uses the Affordable Care Act to suggest that you should change your Medicare, please call the Illinois SMP at (800)699-9043. (This article also highlights the efforts of SMP volunteers across the country who work to prevent Medicare beneficiaries from falling for these types of scams and the work of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.) “Yeah, I’m the Taxman” – No! A resident in Southern Illinois received a voicemail from an out of state number claiming to be calling her about her income taxes. The woman found this strange because she only receives a small social security check and had not been required to file a tax return for years. This week, Sid Kirchheimer posted an AARP blog article on similar scams called “IRS Warns of ‘Sophisticated’ Phone Scam,” which you can read at: http://blog.aarp.org/2013/11/04/irs-warnsof-sophisticated-phone-scam/ Rockford Man Arrested for Alleged Role in Medicare Fraud Scheme A Rockford, IL man was recently arrested in connection with charges in a $12 million fraud scheme. In the indictment, the Rockford man and two other co-conspirators are charged with billing Medicare for services never provided by their home visiting physician practice. Read more about the charges and this alleged scheme in this U.S. Department of Justice press release: http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2013/October/13crm-1151.html $2.2 Billion Johnson & Johnson Settlement Has Illinois Ties The federal government recently announced that Johnson & Johnson would have to pay more than $2.2 billion to resolve allegations of promoting off-label usage of prescription drugs and payment of kickbacks to physicians and pharmacies. This news made headlines as one of the largest health care fraud settlements in U.S. history.
