Teacher: Cognitive Impairment Certification
Non-Union, At-will, 12 month position
POSITION SUMMARY
The transition program teacher is responsible for individualized classroom instruction, supervising work
based experiences, and for directing and supervising career coaches. The teacher must have significant
knowledge and experience with work-based learning and transition services, and demonstrate proficiency
with multiple learning platforms and technology tools. The position includes a full range of professional
special education assignments in a full-functioning capacity.
The transition teacher reports to the VLA Director and Transition Coordinator. Considerable independent
judgment is used to make decisions in carrying out assignments that have significant impact on services or
programs. Guidelines may be available, but require adaptation or interpretation to determine appropriate
courses of action and to ensure compliance, which may include discerning necessary levels of
communication.
QUALIFICATIONS












Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a Special Education Endorsement in Cognitive Impairment
Multiple Secondary Subject Certification (highly desirable)
Three years of satisfactory experience teaching students with cognitive impairments and students
with a learning disability
Experience working with secondary at-risk learners incorporating differentiation into the classroom
and individual instruction plans
Experience in implementing work-based learning and transition services
Desire to represent the VLA Transition Program in a positive manner to the public, LEAs, parents
and other professionals
Must pass criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation
Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license, with the expectation to obtain a chauffeur’s license
Familiarity with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports and CPI
CPR and First Aid training preferred
Must be able to lift students and manipulate wheelchair bound students
Must be physically able to lift 50 pounds, bend, stoop, push, pull, and twist
ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES SHALL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
1. Ensure the safety of all students while providing instruction, experiences, opportunities and
guidance
2. Case manager for assigned students with the responsibility to provide direct services, as needed
3. Use of Skyward and the Edgenuity Learning Management System
4. Use of Illuminate to meet all special education compliance requirements
5. Support determination of eligibility for the transition program within local districts
6. Assist in screening and evaluating to obtain present levels/baselines- (TABE, STATR, WJ-IV
assessments, etc.)

7. Facilitate all expectations and compliance for development of Individual Educational Plans
(IEP’s), including, but not limited to:
a. Schedule, facilitate and complete all IEPs using the Illuminate system to meet all
compliance requirements
b. Conduct the REED as required
c. Ensure all documents are received prior to IEP meeting (psych reports, MET)
d. Complete academic testing for annual IEP’s, write reports and complete the IEPs
e. Mail all approved reports to parents one week before IEP
f. Conduct and lead in the IEPs and team meetings
g. Finalize and implement specific transitional goals and objectives for all students
h. Provide Notice and obtain signatures if needed
i. Prepare and write student progress report for each student
j. Ensure implementation of accommodations, support, and services including necessary
supplies and equipment
8. Build positive classroom environment by utilizing the principles of Positive Behavior
Interventions and Support
9. Understand and utilize learning theory and applied behavioral analysis in the management
and instruction of the students
10. Design, organize, and plan curriculum and conduct individualized lesson plans for all students
within the classroom and community activities
11. Prepare, present and maintain formative and summative assessment evaluations on the
progress of students in the classroom and at the work site
12. Ability to acquire, maintain and apply educational data in a meaningful manner
13. Direct and monitor career coaches in the classroom, school buildings and in the community
14. Ability to create and maintain work based learning documentation, forms, and work plans,
and meet all work based learning compliance requirements
15. Responsible for the transportation of students to community based experiences and work
placements
16. Ability to communicate teaching techniques and behavioral management to staff
17. Maintain cooperative and collegial relationships with all staff, work sites and community
agencies
18. Work closely with teachers, work site supervisors, agency representatives, career coaches as
well as VLA teacher mentors to plan and address concerns
19. Ability to problem solve with students, families, and worksites on potential issues.
20. Be available for families on an as-needed basis via personal contact, phone and online
21. Maintain proper care and general maintenance of the classroom
22. Secure appropriate supplies, materials, and equipment for the classroom, and maintain
proper supervision of all equipment and materials
23. Attend conferences and workshops to promote personal growth and professional knowledge
24. Participate in scheduled field trips, staff meetings and in-service training programs
25. Other duties as assigned
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment Date:
July 1, 2015 pending Board approval and successful completion of employee
drug screening and background checks
Employment Type:
37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 12-month position
Work Schedule:
262 paid days; 221 instructional work days
Work Day:
Standard instructional staff hours: 8 am – 4:00 pm
Salary Range:
$41,000 - $49,000 depending on experience and education
Benefits:
Non-Union, Employee Fringe Benefits including Medical Insurance,
Vacation and Sick Days and participation in Michigan Retirement System
