Job Description POST DETAILS Division/Department Commissioned Services Organisation Canterbury City Council Job title Duty Officer Part Time 20 hours Reports to (job title) Facilities Officer Grade1 2 DBS Requirement The Beaney and Location Canterbury Heritage Museum Politically Restricted Post Standard: No Yes No Enhanced: No JOB PURPOSE To ensure the continuous high quality presentation of the Beaney and other Museums and Galleries for visitors and staff. To support the Head of Operations in delivering high quality customer service, in managing safe access/exit, and in the reduction of opportunity for and incidence of anti-social behaviour. To operate building systems, liaise with maintenance contractors’ operatives, and have responsibility for the safety and security of the building and its contents during the day and out of hours. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES To ensure compliance with all relevant licensing requirements, Fire Authority regulations and H&S legislation. To ensure the safety, well being and comfort of all Users particularly in the context of evacuations and other emergencies. To ensure all public areas are clean, tidy, adequately heated and welcoming whilst the premises are open to the public and to undertake cleaning duties. To prepare spaces within museum buildings for use of visitors and to tidy after use. This can include moving tables, restocking leaflets and other resources and cleaning as required. 1 Page 1 of 4 JD Template October 2013 To manage posting of notices, posters, leaflets and banners in, around and outside the buildings. To monitor and track the use of the buildings and specific spaces to support evaluation measures by other staff. To prepare lighting for new exhibitions. To aid in ensuring the security of collections, loans, spaces and customer possessions. To support risk reduction measures including undertaking regular fire alarm tests, extinguisher checks, and supporting child protection measures. To act as fire warden and first-aider for the Beaney. To perform checks of first aid kits and CCTV within all museums. To identify any general building maintenance requirements in the building and to monitor the work of contractors and staff undertaking remedial work to ensure that it is carried out to a satisfactory standard. To operate mechanical, electrical and computerised plant systems. To perform regular environmental monitoring at each museum and gallery and to operate and monitor data controllers and recorders for temperature and humidity and for checking correct operation of the building plant. To undertake pest monitoring. To support everyday care and maintenance of the Beaney, including checking outside spaces and carrying out any minor repairs or fittings replacements where necessary in line with building manuals. To collate and sort refuse and recycling materials and manage collection. To respond to alarms and emergencies including outside building opening hours. To perform key roles with other staff in service recovery and continuity, including controlling disaster kits and resources. To contact Visitor Services Officers to secure cover if sickness cover is required at weekends. To open and close museum buildings at required times, both for and outside of building opening hours. To operate systems across the day to enable museums and galleries to function safely and to a high standard of presentation for both visitors and staff Special Circumstances. The Museum is a 7 day operation and regularly hosts events outside its core hours. Flexibility to work on weekends, public holidays and before/after public hours on a rostered basis is therefore required. To be able to work across a seven day rota including bank holidays and occasional evenings Responsibility for public safety is central to this role. Applicants should be willing to undergo an accredited training course for First Aid and other Health & Safety To carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and skills of the post holder as may be directed The duties of the post are subject to review and in this respect the details contained are provided as an aid to performance of the contract of employment. REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES Knowledge Skills Experience Qualifications Able to understand and demonstrate knowledge of customer care principles, procedures and good practice. Able to use ladders and work at height. MS Office skills, including Word and Excel Experience of working directly with members of the public in a public building Educated to GCSE level or equivalent First aid certificate/ Health and Safety – willing to obtain if not already holding this certificate.
