SUBJECT: PRESENTER: CHAIRLIFT INSTALLATION August 12, 2002 Page 1 of 2 Installation of Chairlifts at Bryker Woods Elementary School and Pearce Middle School Award of Contract Edward J. Fuentes, Deputy Superintendent Bilingual Education and Human Resources Development Curt Shaw, Director Construction Management RECOMMENDATION That the Board of Trustees award a contract to Home Elevator of Texas in the amount of $80,000 for the installation of inclined chairlifts at Bryker Woods Elementary School and Pearce Middle School BACKGROUND INFORMATION The installation of these chairlifts is in response to accessibility deficiencies, sited by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, during their review and inspection of the recent bond improvements at each school. The base scope of work at Bryker Woods Elementary School includes the installation of an inclined wheelchair lift at the existing stairway, located at the ground-floor classroom wing. The new inclined lift will provide wheelchair access from the ground-floor classroom wing to the music/art rooms and restrooms on the lower level. The design of the lift and platform will not restrict the normal use of the stairway. The base scope of work at Pearce Middle School includes the installation of an inclined wheelchair lift at the existing interior stairway of the 600-classroom wing. The new inclined lift will provide wheelchair access from the ground level (upper floor) to the six classrooms on the lower level. The design of the lift and platform will not restrict the normal use of the stairway. Funding for this project will be available through the 1996 Bond Program. ADMINISTRATIVE CONSIDERATIONS This project was advertised in accordance with state law and Board policy, and public opening of proposals was held on July 30, 2002, at the offices of the AISD Construction Management Department. CHAIRLIFT INSTALLATION August 12, 2002 Page 2 of 2 This project was bid using the competitive sealed-proposal method. Recent legislation allows school districts to obtain proposals from general contractors using this method. The competitive sealedproposal method benefits the owner by allowing discussions, negotiations, and modifications of a general contractor’s proposal prior to the award of contract. Due to the unique nature of this project, only one proposal was received: PROPOSER Home Elevator of TX. PROPOSAL AMOUNT Bryker Woods $38,550 Pearce $41,450 Total: $80,000 The proposal, submitted by Home Elevator of Texas for the installation of the inclined lifts, appears reasonable and is within the amount estimated for this work. Home Elevator of Texas is a local supplier/installer of inclined wheelchair and platform lifts. Home Elevator has successfully completed work with Austin ISD with the installation of the inclined lift at the Baker Administration Center and platform lifts at various schools throughout the District. Verification of references indicates the company is qualified to perform the work. ACTION REQUIRED Board approval. CONTACT PERSONS Edward J. Fuentes Curt Shaw
