Inclined Plane
• An inclined plane is a slanting surface that
connects a lower level to a higher level.
• Examples: a wheelchair ramp and a slide
How does an inclined plane help us do
work?
• Inclined planes let you use less force to do
work
• For example, instead of lifting the box straight
up into the truck, Moby can use the ramp. It
lets him use less force by spreading the work
out over a long distance.
Wedge
• A wedge is often made from two inclined
planes put together.
• Examples: a doorstop, a knife, your front teeth
How do wedges help us do work?
• A wedge uses force to split objects apart
• For example, an axe lets us split things apart
easily.
Your teeth help you break your food apart.
