FINAL EXAM REQUEST INSTRUCTIONS

All faculty instructing credit, career/technical or degree courses must submit exam
requests.
If you do not submit a request for an exam, we will not assume you do not want an exam it is equally important for us to be notified that you DO NOT need an exam as it is that you do.
Scheduling un-needed exams takes up valuable scheduling space.

FINAL EXAM REQUIRED
If you DO require final exams for your credit courses, please fill in the details of your request here:
http://www.mala.ca/ExamSchedules/examinformation.asp, or submit hard copy requests.
Most importantly:




course and section
(ie ENGL 112 S09N01, or PHIL 112 N01-N04)
room request
(ie GYM, or Classroom, or Building: 200 Room: 203)*

any other special requirements or requests
*If you don’t need a specific room but would like a particular type of room, you can put that in the Special
Request/Comments section at the bottom, for instance, “Theatre or large classroom please”.
Please submit one online form for each unique course that requires an exam.

NO FINAL EXAM REQUIRED
If you DO NOT require a final exam for your credit course(s), please do one of the following:



send an email to Sue.Culver@viu.ca including details of the course and section, or group of
courses that don’t need final exams this semester; or
use the online form at http://www.mala.ca/ExamSchedules/examinformation.asp to submit this
information; or
call 2149 to have your course removed from the scheduling process for this semester.

Please note that if you have previously informed me that your course never requires an exam, I have
made a note of this and there is no need to re-submit this information.

Also note that you can use one online form to say no to multiple course/sections. You can also use
the comments section at the bottom if you need more space or want to indicate that the course or
courses will never need exams.

GROUP EXAMS
If you would like your exam written with other courses and/or sections, fill out question #6 by choosing
one of the following:



All MY sections of the above course
ALL sections of the above course regardless of instructor
The following sections
It is only necessary to use the last option when your course will be writing with a different course, for
instance ACCT 100 writing with FNCE 100 S09N01 – S09N04.
GENERAL EXAM INFORMATION:



The final exam period is from Wednesday April 8 to Tuesday January 21, 2009 – note that Friday
April 10th and Monday April 13th are statutory holidays.
The first draft schedule will be made available to faculty by no later than February 13th, and the final
exam schedule will be posted for students on or before March 2nd, 2009.
Exams start at 9am, 1pm and 6:00pm (09:00, 13:00 and 18:00), and are scheduled for 3 hours unless
otherwise specified. All exams are scheduled on weekdays at the above times.
THESE IMPORTANT GUIDELINES SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED:

Please do not schedule any activity for students during this period, nor should faculty make any travel
plans for this period if they will be having a final exam.

No exam worth more than 10% of the final mark of a course shall be scheduled during the last 5
teaching days of the semester (March 30 to April 3). Such exams must be scheduled during the final
exam period.

Take-home exams worth more than 10% of the final mark shall not have a due date during the last 5
teaching days in the semester (March 30 to April 3), nor during the non-instructional days prior to the
start of the exam period (April 6 and 7).

Exams for evening courses begin at 18:00 and are usually scheduled on the same night and in the
same room the course is taught, if it is available. All daytime courses are scheduled between 9:00
and 4:00.

All exams are scheduled within the 8 day exam period with the priority being to avoid student conflicts
and minimize the number of consecutive exams students write.

