2012
The minutes of the last meeting were approved as a true record.

2nd Year Information Session
Martina Daly and the students thought the 2nd Year Information session had gone well.
Claudia Paiva received positive comments regarding the ECR Training and Development
Officers. However, the attendance was poor. All students who didn’t attend were contacted
by Jodie Burnham to see why they weren’t present. A second session has been organised to
give students the information about the Thesis Plan document. Slides will be on the website

following this session and Jodie Burnham will email students with the link. We are responding
to feedback from the session and looking into providing DDP modules on stats, PRISM and
chemistry for biologists.
Action: Jodie Burnham
4.
1st Year Presentation Day
Following discussion it was recommended that all first year students are to attend both 1st
year presentation days. Martina Daly agreed to take this recommendation to SGRC.
5.
3rd Year Presentation Day
Following discussion it was recommended that all students in each Department are to attend
their Department’s session at the third year presentation days. Martina Daly agreed to take
this recommendation to SGRC.
6.
Staff Candidates
Claudia Paiva informed the Committee that there wasn’t enough information for staff
candidates and what is expected of them. Martina Daly informed the Committee that just
recently it has been agreed to treat staff candidates as full time students unless informed
otherwise. The reason being is that although staff candidates follow part-time student
regulations many are actually working full time. Therefore rather than treat them as parttime students when monitoring their progress we will treat them as full-time. It was asked if
this could be clearly stated for students. It was agreed that Jodie Burnham would insert a
sentence on the website on the FAQ and Requirements at a glance pages.
The Doctoral Development Programme and modules were discussed. The culture of
supervisors and students needs to be changed from the credit baring RTP system to the
more flexible student centred training of the DDP.
With regards to the School’s modules the School is to ensure the time-tabling of modules is
organised well in advanced and distributed to students. At the PIC course modules leads will
give a brief presentation on their module. It was suggested having a booklet of further
details of the School’s modules/courses. [Can we have the diary with dates on the website?]
Unfortunately for modules not within the School we are unable to schedule and provides
dates/times/venues. Fozia Yasmin in RIS is responsible for uploading this information on to
the DDP portal.

7.
Student Committee
Due to resignations the MPGS needs representatives from Oncology and Cardiovascular
Science. Alison Gartland recently emailed Human Metabolism students and gained two new
recruits. The PGR Leads from Oncology and Cardiovascular will do the same.
Sara Watkinson informed the Committee that Ian Douglas, Faculty PGR Lead, is to create a
Faculty Graduate School Student Committee. An initial meeting will be held with the current
leads and a proposal for the Committee discussed. The Faculty Graduate School would also
like each Department to hold a Departmental Forum.
8.
PebblePad
The Committee were informed the University has bought a licence for PebblePad. This
software will be continued to be used for PGRs’ e-porfolios and will be introduced for other
tasks.
