Unit 5, Week 4, Day 2 FCAT SKILL: Retell Events in Order Mini-Lesson Teaching Point: Readers retell events in order by telling about the important parts of the story in the correct time order and sometimes using clue words: first, next, soon, then, and last. Materials: 233J, 244/245, 246/247 Connection: (activate prior knowledge and focus student attention on the lesson) Yesterday we practiced retelling events in order by telling about the important parts of the story “City Garden” in the correct time order and sometimes using clue words: first, next, soon, then, and last. Compliment a student that used this in their independent reading yesterday. Today we will continue to retell events in order while reading the story The Ugly Vegetables on page 234 because it will help us summarize the most important events of the story in sequence. Teach: (demonstrate the teaching point as if you were working independently) Remember that we learned that the sequence of events is the order in which story events happen. To retell the events in order, we describe events from the plot of the story in the proper time order. We use the words first, next, and last to help show the sequence of a story. Let me show you how I practice retelling events in order by telling about the important parts of the story The Ugly Vegetables in the correct time order and sometimes using clue words: first, next, soon, then, and last. Read pages 236 – 245. I want to retell the events in the correct order using clue words. Hmm…First, the garden was a piece of land covered by grass. Next, the girl’s mother dug up the grass so the garden became a patch of dirt. Then, the girl and her mother planted seeds and the garden started to grow. Small green stems poked out of the ground. Now the garden is filled with dark green vines, leaves, and small yellow flowers. Did you notice the way I retold the events in order using clue words? Active Engagement: (coach and assess students during this time) Now you are going to have a try. As we read the next two pages, be sure to think about the sequence or order that the events happen in. Use the text and illustrations to help you remember what the girl and her mother do first, next, and last in this part of the story. Read pages 246 – 247. Turn and Talk to your partner and retell the steps the girl’s mother takes to prepare the vegetables. Listen in and compliment a pair of students who were able to retell the steps in order. (i.e. First they pick the vegetables. Next the girl and her mother take the vegetables to the kitchen. Last the mother washes and chops them.) Materials: 233J, 244/245, 246/247 Link: (review and clarify key points, globalizing their utility from the now to the future) Today and everyday when you are reading, it is important to retell events in order by telling about the important parts of the story in the correct time order and sometimes using clue words: first, next, soon, then, and last. This will help you summarize the important parts of the story in sequence. Share: Provide a specific compliment about a student who was successful with today’s teaching point.
