INSPECTION
The school was inspected in May 2011 under the new Common Inspection Framework. There were four recommendations:
1. Raise standards, particularly in Key Stage 4.
2. Improving the quality of teaching, in order to engage and challenge all pupils.
3. Further develop planning for improvement and monitoring in order to focus more on improving pupils’ performance and outcomes.
4. Continue to develop strategies to improve attendance.
The Governors and staff have put together a detailed Action Plan to address these issues, which can be found in the School Development Plan.

SCHOOL TARGETS
This year saw satisfactory results at Key Stage 3 and in line with predictions. GCSE saw significant improvement with all core subjects performing in Quartile 2 against the all-Wales core data sets. AS results have risen again this year and A Level results were our best ever, with all students gaining their university places. Attendance levels were maintained, though I would again plead with parents not to take their children on holiday during school term time.
ACCOMMODATION
In our recent Inspection the following judgement was made – ‘The site is managed particularly effectively and is well-maintained.
’
RESOURCES
The school is well resourced and this continues to be a priority. We now have Interactive White Boards in all the teaching classrooms within the school and these have DVD attachments. Students with parental permission have full access to the Internet but we continue to monitor the situation carefully. Any pupils who mis-use the Internet lose their access.
Textbooks will continue as a priority and every child has access to a text book in each subject. The Library is well resourced and is supported by a new ICT system. We are grateful to the PTA for their continued support of the
Library, which is such an important resource for individual research work.
CURRICULUM
Milford Haven Sixth Form students have been highly successful in the Advanced Level Welsh Baccalaureate
(WBQ). The WBQ was completed for the first time last year. Over forty students have achieved the equivalent of an ‘A’ grade at Advanced level this year.
The school continues to develop the South Pembrokeshire Federation partnership with Pembroke and Greenhill schools with increasing numbers of students travelling between centres to take advantage of a wider range of courses.
The school now offers the Intermediate and Foundation level WBQ to students in Years 10/11. Students will complete the WBQ in the summer of 2012. The WBQ includes a significant amount of community participation activities from students.
The school is offering new courses in BTEC Art, Business, Science and Engineering commencing in September
2011.
At Key Stage 4 we continue to offer a broad and varied Complementary Curriculum which is part funded with money from the European Union and the Pembrokeshire 14-19 Learning Network. Partner organisations include
Pembrokeshire College, PRP Training and the Green Links.
PASTORAL CARE
Pupils are expected to adhere to t he school’s Positive Behaviour Policy; all pupils are given opportunities to gain merits and receive recognition. Departments and Pastoral teams reward pupils on a daily basis for effort, participation, attainment and behaviour. Rewards are recognised in weekly assemblies; end of term assemblies and in the annual Merit Presentation Ceremony. Pastoral teams, including Heads and Assistant Heads of Year and form tutors work very hard to ensure each individual pupil is cared for, supported and encouraged to achieve their potential. A new reward scheme was introduced in 2010/11 for attendance. Pupils receive vouchers from local retailers for 100% attendance and most improved attendance over a term.
The school’s behaviour referral system is well embedded into daily practice. The ‘C form’ system is effectively used for behavioural issues. The Remove isolation unit continues to provide an effective sanction for the more serious issues. The Time Out Centre has been replaced by a Curriculum Support Group which provides additional support to a range of pupils with additional learning and social needs.
The school’s Youth Worker (Suzie Ross) provides invaluable support for pupils who require assistance in developing interpersonal skills, raising self esteem and developing confidence in both individual and group settings.
Some KS4 pupils also achieve accreditation through the Agored Awarding Body. The School Counsellor (Heidi
Leicester) continues to provide an invaluable service by providing pupils with professional counselling support. The
Police Forum continues to provide information sharing opportunities between the school and the local police. The
Police regularly support the school in dealing with internet misuse and drug prevention.

The multi-agency nature of the Teams Around the Child initiative has enabled children and families to receive cohesive support from a range of services and external partners.
A new anti-bullying policy was implemented in 2010/11. Any bullying incidents which occur in the school are immediately dealt with once known about. Anti-bullying messages are continually conveyed to pupils during assemblies and PHSE sessions; the number of reported bullying incidents is low, most of these being linked with cyber bullying. The number of racial abuse incidents occurring within the school is very low.
The School Council has experienced an extremely successful year.
Links with other agencies have developed this year. A number of our students have attended Prince’s Trust and
YMCA courses in outdoor education to promote team building skills and personal development. This work is in addition to the school’s strong partnerships with local training providers and Pembrokeshire College who provide complementary vocational training for individual students.
TRANSITION from PRIMARY to SECONDARY SCHOOL
Transition continues to move forward positively. Discussion and regular interchange of ideas continue with our
Family of Schools, where we develop our literacy, numeracy and science bridging units. As in previous years a comprehensive transition programme ensures all pupils are supported and guided fully during their transition from
Year 6 to Year 7. Discussion also takes place regarding individual pupils prior to their transfer from Primary to
Secondary School.
We were again successful in gaining a bid with the Community Focused Schools Initiative in our Milford Haven
Family of Schools to further develop after school provision. This was supplemented further this year with a grant to develop lunchtime clubs. This has allowed all the schools within the catchment area to extend the range of activities on offer.
SCHOOL SECURITY
All visitors to the school are directed to the school office where they are registered and issued with security badges.
Anyone not wearing a badge is challenged, and asked to leave if they do not have a legitimate reason for being on site. Signs at the back of the school clearly state that visitors must report to reception via the front entrance. In the interests of security and safety to children it is not possible to allow visitors, including parents, to walk through the school grounds or building, other than directly from the front gate, through the car park and up the front steps. Our
CCTV system, with 51 static and 4 fully functional cameras is extremely useful in preventing vandalism and stopping potential bullying.
Having said all that, we are always pleased to see parents in school. (The safest place to park is outside the front wall, and parents are asked to proceed from there on foot to the front entrance.)
We no longer allow pupils to cycle to school. The main road is heavy with traffic in the mornings, crossing back over the road at night is a problem, and it is impossible to keep bicycles safe from wilful vandalism all day long.
We will review the situation if the Authority provides a cycle lane along the main road. We are in dialogue with the
Authority who have visited the site to see our issues.
The Authority has built a crossing island in the road outside the school with railings on both sides of the road to prevent children crossing where it is unsafe.
Children are not allowed on the premises outside school hours except to attend legitimate supervised classes, clubs, events etc. Although we sympathise with young people who see the school grounds as the ideal place for skateboarding, scootering, cycling, playing tennis, football etc., we are not insured for accidental damage to persons or property and therefore cannot allow it. Most damage to school property is caused in this way. We hope you will understand, and raise the level of campaign to provide these facilities for young people in Milford Haven.
One of our biggest worries is the car park at the back of the school. We are asking parents to take extreme care when driving on and off the parking area at the end of the school day. Children have to cross the area on foot to buses and waiting cars or taxis. We have vastly improved the situation by providing safe routes to buses and cars, marked out by white bollards and a zebra crossing across the road to where the buses wait.

PARENT/TEACHER ASSOCIATION
The Milford Haven School PTA is open to parents, staff, former pupils and friends of the school. The aim of the
PTA is to support the school in any way possible, not least through its fund-raising activities, which are also very pleasant social occasions. The PTA meet at the school, every second Wednesday in the month at 6.30 pm in the
Staff Room. New members are very welcome.
The PTA uses its funds to support the library, which it helped us to create. All pupils are able to benefit from its facilities at lunchtime and after school as well as in many lessons. Currently the PTA also provides funding for our
Merit Award Assemblies and annual prizes for Certificate Evening. It has also supported a wide range of other developments within the school, both curricular and extra curricular.

We endeavour to support all pupils with Special Educational Needs; Equality of opportunity is central to our organisation.
PUPILS with DISABILITIES
Arrangements for admission are the same as for other pupils, and we are proud of the special expertise we have developed in helping pupils with speech and language difficulties. Disabled pupils are treated as far as possible the same as other pupils, but unfortunately we do not have wheelchair access to all areas of the curriculum.
A new lift installed three years ago allows access to the Library and the Humanities Block, including ICT, as well as improving access to the Special Needs Department and new disabled toilet facilities. This has greatly improved life for pupils in wheelchairs and their carers. Unfortunately, access to Art, Business, Food Technology and Welsh will still not be possible; these needs will have to be addressed at a later phase. However, we are delighted at these new improvements for which we have campaigned for a long time.

SCHOOL EVENTS AND COMMUNITY LINKS 2010-11
Remembrance Service – The Service this year was led by the Head Boy and Head Girl. Pupils played ‘The Last
Post’ and ‘The Reveille’ and the Headteacher read the Exhortation. Once again, we were pleased to welcome guests from the British Legion.
Certificate Evening – Due to a flood and inclement weather unfortunately we had to postpone Certificate Evening from December to April. Our guest speaker in April was Victoria James, the youngest female to climb Everest. It was an occasion for celebration for pupils and staff following superb examination results.
Carol Service – St Katharine’s and St Peter’s Church was, as usual, the venue for this special occasion. Readers performed with dignity and the choir sang beautifully. It is a time when school and the community unite and enjoy mince pies in the Church Hall after the Service.
Community Award Ceremony – This took place on the last Friday of the Summer Term when three organisations in
Milford Haven contributed prizes for pupils gaining the highest number of merits in each form. In return pupils gave out the money they had raised in the May Meander to a number of local charities of their choice. The amount
D:\726821587.doc

han ded over was in excess of £1,800. This ceremony is one of the highlights of the year and further cements the partnership between the school and the local community.
Eisteddfod – March 2011 saw our twelfth Eisteddfod taking place. Entries in competitions were at their highest ever and judges were delighted with the standard and variety of work undertaken. The Music and English Departments played a prominent part alongside the Welsh department, but all Departments were represented either through events on the day or in competitions held in the preceding weeks.
Community Work – The Sixth form supported several charities during the year including £22,000 for Children in
Need. This brings the total collected for this particular charity to o ver £150,000 in the last thirteen years.
ACHIEVEMENTS, TRIPS AND RESIDENTIAL VISITS
Art:
Eisteddfod – This year we had a very high uptake for the Year 7 ‘Dragons’ and Year 8 ‘Famous Welsh
Faces’ competitions. A variety of extremely creative work was produced by students, including traditional drawing and painting, collage, wood carving and Eco sculptures.
Google – Due to our previous success in ‘Google’ competitions, we entered the ‘I love football’ competition in celebration of the World Cup. Although we did not win any prizes, it was a success for us due to the amount of boys entering.
Fish Week – Two sculptures were entered into the Pembrokeshire Fish Week Art competition. Both were on display at Oriel y Parc, St Davids during July and August 2010.
Pembrokeshire Schools – exhibitions took place in Tenby and the Waterfront Gallery, Milford Haven to celebrate the success of ‘A’ Level and ‘GCSE’ students. Ten students contributed.
‘Creation’ – An exhibition of students’ work in connection with a week of Christian outreach took place in the former Post Office, Milford Haven for a week at the end of September. Years 7 and 8 pupils contributed work.
Visiting Artists – Hilary Statts worked with Mr Green’s Year 10 Applied Art group to help develop their understanding and skills in Theatre design. Pupils involved helped design and make the stage set for the school production of Calamity Jane.
Masterclass – pupils from feeder schools attended a day masterclass. They took part in drawing, painting, ceramic, metal and sculpture activities, culminating in two exciting pieces of work inspired by the sea. The
Year 10 Applied Art class helped out with the pupils.
LNG Calendar competition: Years 7-10 pupils had the opportunity to take part in a competition to paint a local landmark. Rhiannon Stephens of Year 10 produced a winning entry that was featured on the front cover of the 2011 calendar.
Christmas celebrations: Upper Sixth students designed ideas for the front cover of the Carol Service programme. Agn ieszka Niewiarowska’s design on poinsettia and candles was chosen as the most suitable design. Sixth Form photography students visited St Katharine’s and Saint Peter’s Church to visually document all aspects of the Church environment. The photographs taken were collated into an album and framed image which were presented to Canon John Davies on his retirement, as a token of appreciation of his work and commitment to the School.
Years 11, 12 and 13 completed their coursework and examination units. Year 11 completed their 10 hour exam successfully. All were congratulated for their organisation and behaviour which made the exam run smoothly. Borderline pupils took part in ‘Hotseating’ sessions to help improve their grades. Year 12 Art and
Photography pupils completed their 8 hour final exam. Year 13 Art and Photography pupils completed their
12 hour exam, producing some outstanding work. All pupils who applied for College received offers, four pupils gaining places on the Art Foundation Course in Pembrokeshire College.
The Department passed their Key stage 3 assessment, meeting all moderation requirements fully.
Environmental artist Tina Cunningham held a workshop for Year 8 pupils. Tina collated research from her visit in order to gain a grant from the Arts Council of Wales. Photographer Phil Holden also attended the workshop and his keen to return to talk to ‘A’ Level students about his work as a professional photographer.
Mrs Charlton’s Year 7 group produced a piece of ceramic artwork which was placed on the wall in the
Welsh department stairwell.
English / Drama:
Schools Shakespeare Festival, Macbeth – Mrs Batten directed a production of Macbeth as part of the
Shakespeare Schools’ Festival. The performance took place on 2 nd November. Josh Richards, member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, came into school and delivered a 4 hour workshop to the cast of
Macbeth. The cast also did a workshop with the Welsh National Youth Theatre at the Torch Theatre. Ben
Meagher, past pupil, worked with the cast members in the initial stages of preparation for the Shakespeare
Festival.
A trip was held to the Torch Theatre to see theTheatre D’Complicite / Disappearing Numbers, part of the
National Theatre live series of events.

Members of the Sixth Form supported pu pil Sam Freeman in a production of ‘Julia’ by the Torch Youth
Theatre.
Pupils studyin g ‘A’ Level and GCSE Drama attended a performance of ‘Bouncers’ by Black Rat
Productions at the Torch Theatre on 4 th November.
Heath Fransham Prizewinners – The joint winners of the Heath Fransham prize for 2010 were Tyler Griffiths and Layton Morgan-Jewitt.
Rotary Club Competition – Sarah Picton, U6th, won the Welsh round of the Rotary Club ‘Young Writers.’
Staff in the English Department were very pleased to learn that Sarah received a letter of congratulations from a Welsh Assembly Minister who asked if she could use sections of Sarah’s poem in future speeches!
The guided reading programme continued with Years 7 and 8 students.
World Cup Reading Group – Various members of the English Department assisted Mrs Hudson with the

We took 47 students on an action packed holiday to Sicily, Italy in the Easter holidays 2011. The first full day saw us travelling by cable car and 4x4 trucks to the crater of Mount Etna, the most active volcano in the whole of Europe. Once we travelled up the side of the volcano we eventually arrived above the cloud and mist at the crater rim. There was a smell of sulphur in the air and with gases and steam swirling about us we met our guide who then took us around the crater’s edge. Even the ground was warm to touch! On the second day we caught the ferry to the island of Vulcano to climb another active volcano called ‘Vulcano’.
The walk up gave us fantastic views over the island and around the crater hissing fissures were covered with a bright yellow layer of sulphur. Following our visit to the crater we made our way by foot to the volcanic mud pools. A soak in this warm natural bath where the water temperature is around 32c is very relaxing and therapeutic. The third day saw us visiting the town of Taormina which is dominated by Mount
Etna which is a menacing presence. We had plenty of time to buy souvenirs and sample real Italian life, including the ice cream! In the morning we visited a typical Italian farm and sampled many of the fruits and vegetables grown and we were allowed to pick and eat as many oranges as we wished! During the evening at a local restaurant students had a pizza making lesson and then made, cooked and ate their own pizzas!
On our final full day we visited the southern side of Mount Etna to see the effects of the last major eruption.
It was very strange walking through an almost lunar landscape, trees and buildings destroyed with an eerie silence in the air. The afternoon saw us board our flight for home, taking with us many special memories of our time in Sicily.
Year 7 completed their Bronze Young Navigator Star Award. They were awarded a certificate produced by the Geography department and the official certificate and badge from the National Navigation Award
Scheme, once completed.
Year 12 students spent 2 days on fieldwork. One day was spent visiting Swansea examining its growth and change over time. The second day was spent gathering river flood management information on the Gower.

The 3 lead internal verifiers for Health & Social Care, Travel & Tourism and Sport BTEC have all successfully undertaken the OSCA2 assessment and are now accredited by Edexcel as internal verifiers.
BTEC T&T students visited Edward Brothers in Milford Haven to find out about customer services.
GCSE H&SC pupils experienced an enjoyable visit to Rickeston Mill Nursing home in December. Pupils were shown around the home by the Matron who talked about the different types of clients that they care for and outlined the help that they needed. Specialised equipment was demonstrated and adaptations to everyday appliances and equipment were seen. The activities officer showed the pupils the activities room and some of the things that the elderly clients had made. The pupils retu rned the kindness of the homes’ hospitality by singing some Christmas carols for the residents who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and joined in the singing. Mary Ann Wray sang a solo that was appreciated by residents and pupils alike. Pupils had brought cakes and mince pies, some home made, that they left for the residents to enjoy for afternoon tea.
AS/A2 H&SC students enjoyed a visit from a complementary therapist who specialises in aromatherapy, massage and reflexology. Mrs Bebbington showed the students all the oils she uses allowing them to

sample them. She gave them information needed to complete their coursework about complementary therapies and answered a plethora of questions from the students.
A day of practical and theoretical workshops on the 14 th March, covering elements of the syllabus was organised for the AS/A2 students by Careers Wales West. Students found this day very useful as they had input from specialists in the field of Health and Social Care and also have the opportunity to meet students from the other Pembrokeshire schools.
Year 10 pupils spent a day in April visiting two local Health and Social care settings, Havenhurst Nursing
Home and Happy Days Nursery. The class was divided into two groups and each group visited one setting in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The visit to Happy Days proved to be a very exhausting experience for pupils who had to help the staff in looking after the children. It was a very hands-on experience and gave an excellent insight into what is involved when working with young children. The manager showed the pupils around the nursery, explaining a little about what they do and the rules and regulations they must follow. She stressed the importance of confidentiality. The visit to Havenhurst was also very enjoyable and pupils were able to interact with elderly clients in the day centre as well as those in the nursing home.
Students from years 12 and 13 visited Park House Residential Home in Tenby. This is a huge facility that houses approximately a hundred residents. It also incorporates a mental health ward for the NHS and a private nursery. Students were given a full tour of all the facilities with an explanation of the specialist equipment that was seen. They were also able to interact with the clients and asked them questions. Mr
Sawyer, the training manager then spoke to the students about everything that goes on in Park House and answered any questions the students had. He also said that any student who needed work experience for their UCAS applications would be welcome to come there to do this. He also said that it would be possible for students to get holiday jobs at Park House and that these could continue throughout their university courses. This meant that not only would the students be gaining valuable experience but would also get paid for it!
History:
We held a ‘meet the heroes day’ where pupils from Year7 to Year 13 had a chance to listen to and ask questions of paratrooper Ernie Evans. It was a fascinating event and one that held everyone in awe at his wartime exploits.
We also embarked on a trip to see the History Boys in Cardiff with the 6 th Form in March.
ICT:
OCR Nationals Level 2 : This was the first cohort to complete the OCR Nationals Level 2 course. The course was very well received by both students and department members. We were visited by our external moderator on 3 occasions during the delivery of this course, each time with positive feedback.
A major development in the department is that of our online assessment system. This can be found at http://www.ictdept.com
and is accessed regularly by pupils not only to access their tasks, but also to assess their own performance, and gain feedback from staff. Along with this we also de veloped an iPhone ‘app’ with pupils who can download directly onto their iPhone’s or iPod Touch’s to keep track of their performance. Our logs show that 2 pupils actually did this on Christmas Day!! As far as we know, we are the only school in the UK hav e an iPhone ‘app’ to do this, something we are very proud of, and is a great motivator for the pupils.
OCR Nationals Level 3: We started a new A Level course with Year 12 this Year, to link in with the course we deliver at Key Stage 4. The OCR Nationals Level 3 is a vocational based A Level consisting of 6 units of work over 2 years. Students will gain experience in producing documents for business, use different business communication methods, work collaboratively to produce a gadget magazine, model situations using spreadsheets, produce multimedia products which will include video, animation and sound, and create and host websites.
Robot Club: Robot Club ran every Wednesday after school with attendance from pupils of all year groups.
Pupils built their robots from Lego Mindstorms kits and competed in a ‘Robot Olympics’.
We were delighted with our first set of results from the new OCR Nationals Level 2 in ICT. The visiting moderator assessed our coursework at the end of May and she agreed with our claim of 98.9% one or more
A* - C GCSE equivalent grades in Year 11. In ICT we have had an improving A* - C pass rate over the past three years but these are our best results yet. This is down to the hard work of the pupils and the dedication of the ICT teachers. The department already has good results for pupils in Year 10 and we hope to have another excellent set of Key Stage 4 results next year as well.
Learning Support:
The Curriculum Support Group has been established since September 2010 on a part time basis for 25 hours a week over a two-week timetable. As a department we continue to support the Complementary Curriculum by providing LSAs for pupils who need support for college courses such as catering, welding and animal care. These courses are run in
Pembrokeshire College and Pembroke Dock.
Once again we took a group of our most vulnerable Year 8 and 9 pupils to Stackpole this year. They spent 2 nights away from home, with Learning Support staff, enjoying activities such as Heatherton, Silent World and the Creative Café.
Ten pupils from Years 7,8,9 and the Lower 6 th Life Skills Course participated in a UCAN Production drama workshop for a week in December. A number of professional well known actors gave their time and support in encouraging and enabling the pupils to act out their own version of three well known fairy tales. This culminated with the group presenting their production to an audience of parents and senior staff in the
Steynton Hall. The performance was extremely well received and the pupils worked very hard throughout the week. Well done to all who were involved in the production and to the pupils themselves – you were all stars!
Once again the National Skills groups worked hard in designing and making Christmas decorations. The driftwood Christmas trees and wooden decorations went down very well at the table top sale during break just before Christmas.
As part of the 6 th Form trip, all pupils on the Life Skills course visited the Senedd in Cardiff as part of the
Welsh Baccalaureate. They also attended the 6 th Form Ball.

World Cup Fever June - July 2010 - Pupils (mainly boys) took part in activities to coincide with the FIFA
World Cup 2010. They started off with a World Cup Quiz and a prediction sheet. They created a display of football shirts and country profiles and they did a World Cup Maths Quiz. We also read the Tom Palmer football story – ‘Foul Play: The World Cup Mystery’ each day throughout the World Cup competition. The author wrote a chapter each night after all the matches were played and included lots of references about what happened in the football. Each chapter was then ready to download in the morning. We read the story at the end of each lunchtime and had a variety of different staff members to read to pupils. There were some very interesting discussions both about the story, the football and living in Africa. Mrs Rowley lent us a vuvuzela to try out, Mr Meirion Jones talked about his time growing up in South Africa and Mrs Zoogah told us all about her time in Ghana. We ended the whole event with a World Cup party. During the course of the story, we took part in a competition to win a visit from the author but unfortunately, were unsuccessful. However, he took the time to write to our pupils thanking them for sticking with the story every day and to all the staff involved for taking part.

World Book Day 2011 : The activity this year involved the whole school. Staff (including teaching, admin, canteen, support etc.) wore badges displaying book titles. The titles related to their subject area or their role in school or to their name where relevant. Pupils were issued with a list of book titles and had to find out which staff were wearing them. The books were also displayed in the library to show that they were actual titles and to encourage them to try one or two of them. It proved to a very successful and enjoyable event which the staff enjoyed as much as the pupils. The prizes for the girl and boy who matched the most titles were vouchers and signed copies of books by Ally Kennen and Chris Bradford.
Quiz League: Ten teams took part in this year’s Winter Quiz League. Several Year 11 teams took part for the first time encouraged by Miss Sizer and Miss Wells. The winning team was a Year 7 team called ‘The
Musicians’ – Angharad Raymond, Blake Wonnacott, Stefan Bryce and Mrs Sarah Lloyd.
