The Dermatology department sees patients on a mostly outpatient basis. While we frequently see patients with comedones, our most serious patient population includes our cancer cases. We do thorough reviews of the skin to look for suspicious lesions that may indicate a neoplastic process. The most common of these types of cases are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and the most dreaded of all, melanoma. Our hospital is one of the first in the country to offer the clinical trial for the melanoma vaccine, which is used in concert with interleukin-2. Our center also utilizes many of the more conventional treatments as well, including Mohs surgery, cryosurgery, laser surgery, and electrodessication. In any event, our most important work is with the population as a whole, encouraging them to do regular home self-checks and to use appropriate sun block, even on cloudy or overcast days.

The Department of Oncology provides comprehensive cancer treatments for all adults with solid tumors or hematologic malignancies. The Department is the clinical arm of the Research Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer

Center. Over 250 clinical research trials in all aspects of human cancer are currently being conducted within the Department. Many of our patients come to us as ambulatory patients, to be reviewed for a recent cancer diagnosis. Oncology and

Nuclear Medicine are collaborating on a new program to visualize cancers below the limits of detection with CT scan or MRI using positron emission tomography (PET scanning). A clinical trial was recently approved. In addition, our most often treated cases include gene therapy for head and neck cancers as well as liver tumors.

Vaccines are an active area of research for our patients. We also specialize in
