Portcullis
Ramparts (mounds of earth or stones) built around the top of
a castle. The gaps between them were used for firing arrows
through.
A wooden bridge that allowed people to get in to the castle
over the moat. It could be raise and lowered.
A tower on top of the motte (like a hill). It was the most
protected and safest part of the castle.
A place where banquets were held and people ate together.
A trench around the castle filled with water.
Holes in the ceilings where stones or boiling tar could be
thrown on enemies attacking the castle.
A strong gate that hangs above the entrance to a castle. It can
be closed to keep out enemies. It was made of wood and
metal and had points at the bottom.
