It will focus on integrative approaches to understanding evolution of Ancient Lakes systems with sessions concerning microbial communities in ancient lakes, ecological speciation, conservation and invasive species, and novel perspectives on taxonomy. Keynote speakers will include Tom Wilke, Pete McIntyre discussing topics ranging from deep drilling perspectives in ancient lakes to environmental perspectives on species extinctions. New to this SIAL meeting, we will be having Hot Topic Discussions which will be a half hour informal meeting including a brief presentation on novel techniques followed by a discussion of how to integrate these practices into current research. These will include discussions on genomics, paleo-geo analytical approaches, food webs, and ancient DNA. Novel Perspectives on the taxonomy of Ancient Lakes General Perspectives on Ancient Lakes Comparative Ancient Lakes Studies Preliminary Program Opening ceremony and reception will be held at the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, 2990 Riverside Dr. W, Windsor Ontario Poster sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The excursions will be all day Wednesday the 19th. The banquet will be Thursday evening cruising the Detroit River. Student awards, and closing remarks will be held on the Friday afternoon. Registration Online registration will start on March 15th, 2015 at the SIAL website (www.sialonline.org/sial7). A reminder will be sent out with the third circular. Conference fees Regular: $ 200 (CDN) Students: $ 70 (CDN) The fee includes all conference activities (ice breaker, two coffee breaks on session days), but not the conference banquet or the excursions. Two excursions will be offered (prices include lunch): Trip to Point Pelee, $35 (CDN). Tour of Wiser’s Distillery: TBD The conference banquet will cost $60 (CDN). The conference fee can be paid during online registration by credit card (secure transaction). Abstract Submission After registration, abstracts for conference contributions can be uploaded. The deadline for abstract submission is June 1st, 2015. All abstracts will be reviewed by the scientific committee and presentations will be accepted based on scientific merit only. Student Grants Four student grants of up to $500 (CDN) each for airfare, accommodation, and registration will be available. All regular graduate students (Master’s and PhD programs) are encouraged to apply. The application must include an abstract, CV, and a short letter of motivation and should be sent electronically to the conference secretariat (sial@uwindsor.ca) no later than June 1st, 2015. Best Presentation Award The scientific committee will award the best student oral presentation and the best student poster presentation $100 (CDN) each at SIAL 7. Accommodation Conference room contingents will be reserved in the conference location at the Waterfront Hotel in Windsor ranging from $122 (CDN) (1-4 people), to $142 (CDN) (Deluxe Room), and $182 (CDN) (Junior Suite) (http://www.windsor-hotel.ca/).
