DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ADVANCED/HONORS/ AP POLICY ATTENDANCE Enrolling in an Advanced, Honors, or Advanced Placement (AP) class requires both student and parents to commit to a yearlong program of academic study. There is no substitute for class time. Therefore, students in the Advanced/Honors/ AP program will follow the attendance policy with the following additions: It is required that all assignments missed due to school-excused absences be made up on time at the teacher’s discretion. If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher immediately upon returning to school regarding making up both class work and homework. The English Department strongly recommends parents schedule appointments (doctor and dentist appointments, college visitations etc.) so they do not conflict with Advanced, Honors, or AP courses. Students who attend school regularly benefit most from challenging, academically rigorous curriculum offered in accelerated courses. If absenteeism begins to affect a student’s class performance, the teacher may request a conference with student, parents, teacher, and school counselor. GRADING A committed student who completes all work with excellence and on time can earn an “A” or a “B” in the course. A student receiving a “C” or below may be required to confer with the parent, counselor, and teacher to determine whether the student should continue in this course. HOMEWORK It is understood that a successful Advanced/Honors/ AP student will spend an appropriate amount of time each night in meaningful study. Summer assignments must be completed to meet requirements for that course. PRIORITY/ SELECTION CRITERIA 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Writing proficiency exam Semester grades in English Recommendation of prior teachers and counselor GPA Attendance record Parent commitment to support Advanced/Honors/ AP policy statements Student commitment to complete the course to take the AP exam. The expectation is that by taking the AP course, the student will be prepared to take the exam to earn college credit. We use as many indicators of academic performance as possible when considering students for the Advanced/Honors/ AP English program. No single item is ever the sole criterion for selecting the Honors or Advanced Placement student. We ask four questions when considering a student: 1. 2. 3. 4. Does the student have sufficient general ability? Does the student demonstrate adequate academic preparation? Does the student show sufficient motivation and maturity? Does the student act with personal integrity and show respect for school policies and procedures? DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT REQUEST FOR ADVANCED/HONORS/AP PLACEMENT As outlined in the Dublin High School Scheduling Handbook, courses may require prerequisites for placement. Placement in Advanced, Honors or Advanced Placement courses also carry specific criteria for consideration of a student assignment to these classes. The following criteria are used to evaluate each student: teacher recommendation, previous grades, attendance record, and previous performance in the Honors program. To request that a student be considered for placement in an Advanced, Honors or Advanced Placement course, parents and students must read the information on the accompanying form and sign and return this request form to the appropriate teacher. I have read the ADVANCED/HONORS/A.P. Policy Statement and I agree to perform at the expected class level. If I enroll in an A.P. course, I will take the A.P. exam. I understand that my DHS counselor must be notified before June 1, if I wish to withdraw from this class. ________________________________ Student Signature ______________ Student # _________________ Date I have read the Advanced/Honors/ A.P.
