GENERAL 1.1 Description 1 of 3 Essentially anhydrous ammonia, NH3, packed under pressure, in the form of a clear, water-white liquid, with a sharp suffocating or intensely irritating odour. : - 33,5 C : - 77,7 C : 0,674 g/cm3 : 651 C : ca 2 277 kPa : 1167 J/g : 89,9 g/100 cm3 : 2,5 % 1.2 Properties Boiling point at 1atm Freezing point at 1atm Density of liquid at boiling point Autoignition temperature Vapour Pressure at 55 C Latent heat of vaporisation at 25 C Solubility in water at 0 C Coefficient of expansion (per 10 C rise in temperature) 1.3 Toxicity The material is very toxic (Rating 4 according to "Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products"). The probable lethal dose (to humans) is 50 to 500 mg/kg of body mass. TWA OEL-R ST OEL-RL : 17 mg/m3 or 25 p.p.m. as NH3 : 24 mg/m3 or 35 p.p.m. as NH3 (According to "Occupational Health and Safety Act", Act 85 of 1993, as amended.) 1.4 Hazards THE MATERIAL IS UNDER PRESSURE. The material causes severe burns to the skin and is extremely irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. The vapour is poisonous and may cause pulmonary oedema. It is a moderate fire hazard, and it forms explosive mixtures at concentrations of 16 to 27 % (v/v) in air. Brief exposure at 5 000 p.p.m. may cause rapid death due to suffocation or fluid in the lungs. 1.5 Special Precautions Avoid ingestion, inhalation, contact with the skin and eyes. Wear full protective clothing when handling the material and ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid sources of ignition and heat. Storage tanks must be earthed for protection against lightning or static electricity. Care must be exercised when opening the valves.
