March 23, 2012 INDUSTRY FILE REVIEW – IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION Subject: Cancellation of Industry File Review for New/Revised Requirements in the Standard for Safety for Flow Control Valves for Anhydrous Ammonia and LP-Gas, UL125, Review ID# 125-2011-005 On April 6, 2011, UL announced an Industry File Review for UL125 with an Effective Date of January 28, 2014. The file review was established to determine compliance of Flow Control Valves for Anhydrous Ammonia and LP-Gas with the Moist Ammonia Air Stress Cracking Test requirements in UL125. This requirement applies to pressure confining brass parts containing more than 15 percent zinc. UL has determined, upon further study, that Flow Control Valves for Anhydrous Ammonia and LPGas that have met the requirements of the former stress corrosion tests will not need to be retested. No immediate action on your part is required. UL will maintain the certification of all currently UL certified brass components, regardless of which test was used for the certification of the product. For new or revised product investigations, the requirements contained in the most current version of the Standard will be applied. This means that going forward, the Moist Ammonia Air Stress Cracking Test specified in the Standard will be used. UL has also reviewed its Follow-Up Inspection Program for brass components, and noted that the Follow-Up Inspection Program may need to be revised to assure continued compliance with the requirements in the Standard. UL will establish a focus group of industry members to provide input on the structure of the Follow Up program associated with Flow Control Valves for Anhydrous Ammonia and LP-Gas. We anticipate at least one face-to-face meeting, with much of the work performed by email and telephone. If you are interested in learning more, or participating in the focus group, please contact Ken Boyce at Kenneth.p.boyce@ul.com or 847.664.2318 to express your interest. Once volunteers have been identified, UL will provide additional details about the logistics of the focus group. We realize that some customers may have already submitted products for investigation to UL and if such is the case, UL would appreciate your contacting the staff that handled your project. If you have any questions or comments about the cancellation of this file review, please contact Michael Slowinske at Michael.Slowinske@ul.com . We appreciate your participation in UL’s Certification Program and your continued support. Sincerely, Michael A. Slowinske Engineering Manager UL LLC
