Mindfulness-based Treatment for Trauma-related
Dissociation
International Speaker and Trainer in the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation
Dr Janina Fisher
One -day workshop 11th September 2012 (9am-5pm)
Conference Rooms, Ardington Hotel, Steyne Gardens, Worthing, West Sussex, BN11 3DZ
Over the last decade there has been a renaissance in our understanding of trauma, leading to the
evolution of innovative treatment models such as EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Yet,
treating the legacy of childhood trauma and neglect is frequently complicated by dissociation-related
challenges: intrusive emotions, crises in the therapeutic alliance, shame and self-loathing, selfdestructive behaviour, paradoxical responses to treatment, an unstable and fragmented sense of self
as well as dissociative symptoms and disorders. Rising to these challenges requires first an
understanding of dissociative phenomena and the use of therapeutic interventions that increase the
capacity for emotional regulation as well as help our clients experience a more embodied and
coherent sense of self.
This workshop will introduce participants to an integrative model for understanding dissociation as
an ability or defence in the face of attachment failure, psychological stress and trauma. Rooted in the
assumption that complex symptoms are best addressed with the most straightforward approaches,
this model combines traditional treatment paradigms with Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and
Mindfulness-based techniques to create a simple but clinically effective treatment that is also
informed by Neurobiological understandings of trauma and dissociation. This workshop is
appropriate for clinicians working with Dissociative Identity Disorder as well as those treating clients
with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder and Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.
Dr Janina Fisher is a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in the treatment of complex trauma and
Dissociative Identity Disorder. In addition to her private practice, she is a Consultant Psychologist at
