The Blufflands Project Prescribed Burn Plan and Report Date Plan Prepared :2/21/2008 Landowner:************* County: **** Township Name: ******** Town: ** Range: ** Section: ** ¼: SW ¼ ¼: ** Address: **** Phone:***** Prepared by Alanna Koshollek Prescribed Burn Unit Description Burn Management Objective: Promote fire adapted species (oak/ forbs), top-kill garlic mustard seedlings and second year rosettes. Consume 70 % of the 1 hour fuels. Burn Unit Size: 20 A Slope: 20% Aspect: S Fuel Types: 1 hr fuels—grass, oak leaves, small diameter woody shrubs, branches Hazards and Constraints:_Landowner’s house to the south of the unit and neighbor’s house to the northwest. Aim to prevent smoke from going over CTY Hwy C to the south. There is a down fence on the southeast side of the unit on the eastern neighbor property. The fence is approximately 30 feet to the west of the eastern break. This fence will be shown to the crew during the pre-burn briefing and tour of the unit. Twp prescribed burn ahead signs will be posted on CTY Hwy C to notify motorists of the burn. Burn Prescription and Preparation Desired Burn Effects:_Promote fire adapted species (oak/ forbs), top kill garlic mustard seedlings and second year rosettes. Burn Condition Prescription: Relative Humidity: 25-35 Windspeed: 8-12 Wind Direction: W to S 1 hr. Fuel Moisture: 5-7 % 10 hr. Fuel Moisture: 7-12% 100 hr. Fuel Moisture: 12% and up 1000 hr. Fuel Moisture: damp-wet 1 hr Fuels (fine): up to ¼ in. diameter 10 hr. Fuels (fine): ¼ in. to 1 in. diameter 100 hr. Fuels (medium): 1 in. to 3 in. diameter 1000 hr. Fuels (large): 3 in. to 8 in. in diameter Fire Break Pre-Burn Preparation: Landowner will take care of installing breaks by leaf blowing a 3 foot wide foot trail on the east and south side of the unit. The other breaks, north and west, will be blown off also, but will be approximately 5 feet wide and utility vehicle accessible. ALF crew will check and re-blow if needed on the day of the burn. Burn Plan Equipment Needed: # personnel: 6-10 Back Cans: 10+ Drip torches: 3-4 Radios: 5-7 Hand Tools: 2 Flappers/ McLeod and Pulaski for mop-up Water Sources: Utility vehicle with slip-on unit carrying 80 gallons of water. Can fill up at the house from hose. Other Equipment: Chainsaw and appropriate PPE for operation Ignition Plan: The ignition operation will be accomplished through ground ignition using hand held drip torches. A test fire will be ignited on the down wind side of the burn. If the results of the test fire are satisfactory, ignition will continue anchored into the test fire. From the test fire, a backing fire will be utilized to develop a suitable black line of at least 50ft and work to meet ecological objectives of top-killing garlic mustard with increased residence time. There is a significant fuel load to the north of the unit; this property is not owned by the landowner. Firing by two igniters will proceed to extend out from both directions of the test fire. Strip head fires may be used to complete the black line or burning in areas where foot travel is considered safe. An interior igniter will use spot/dot ignition on the slopes to reduce the intensity around the residual oaks. Holding may be necessary for lines occasionally to allow for interior ignition to be done safely. The personnel in charge of each line are expected to work closely together to see that the ignition pattern and sequence do not present concern for control of the burn. Given enough black the igniters will proceed to ring the fire. Unburned areas within the unit may be ignited following carrying out the above. Wet-line will be applied as needed on the day of the burn to the breaks. A lookout for the crew will continue to check back to the point of origin as directed by the line or burn boss throughout the course of the burn. Ideally the burn will be timed so that 100-1000 hour fuels are damp (several days after a rain) so that some larger fuel will catch and burn up, but we want mop-up minimized. Mop-up Plan: During the day of firing operations, mop-up will occur within 40 feet of the fireline and areas that might threaten the line. Containment of the prescribed fire will be achieved prior to leaving the site. Dispatch and Iowa/Sauk Co. Sherriff’s will be notified when the burn is complete and if any material is going to be left burning overnight within the unit. Any left burning overnight will be monitored by landowner until the fire is dead out. Landowner will be in contact with the ALF crew if he needs assistance with any flare-ups while he is monitoring it. Contingency Plan: Any fire outside the primary unit will be immediately reported to the Burn Boss. The crew at the scene will initially attack the escape as directed by the Burn Boss or Specialist in charge of the closest line. Ignition will cease upon notification of an escape fire except as needed to secure lines. An attempt will be made to suppress all spot fires or slop-overs outside the primary unit at the smallest possible size. The Burn Boss will have the authority to declare the prescribed fire a wildfire. This will be communicated to the local DNR Ranger and Dispatch. After calling dispatch in the case of a wildfire *** and *** house would be priority areas to defend. The Wintergreen should be contacted also if escaped fire was declared a wildfire. Safety Plan: Use trails located along the north ridgeline or along the central/ western part of the unit to escape to the gravel drive/ lawn/ or burned/black created within the unit. Escape routes will be identified during pre-burn briefing and unit tour. Prescribed Burn Plan and Report Crew: Click here to enter text. Date of Burn: Click here to enter a date.
