Mater Dei Institute of Education A College of Dublin City University Assistant Lecturer in Systematic Theology (Fulltime, Fixed Term 3 year Contract post) Mater Dei Institute, a College of Education, a foundation of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin and a College of Dublin City University, is seeking to recruit an Assistant Lecturer in Systematic Theology located within the School of Theology. THEOLOGY IN MATER DEI The School of Theology is one of the Institute’s three Schools and contributes modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on Systematic Theology, Philosophical and Theological Ethics, Scripture, Liturgy, Ecumenism and World Religions. At undergraduate level it contributes to Theology modules in: the four year Bachelor of Religious Education concurrent initial teacher education programme, the three year Bachelor of Arts in Irish Studies and Religious Studies programme, and the modular Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Lifelong Education programme. At postgraduate level it contributes modules to the various postgraduate programmes in Theology (MA in Theology), Ethics (MA in Ethics) and to the continuing professional development of teachers (MA in Religion and Education) and of other professionals especially in the areas of chaplaincy and pastoral ministry (MA in Chaplaincy Studies and Pastoral Work). It also works with the School of Humanities in the delivery of teaching on the Holocaust and Modern Culture. Research degrees at MA and Ph. D. level are also offered. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST The successful applicant will: Take a prominent and active role in the School of Theology through the development and delivery of programmes, pathways and modules (both on-campus and at outreach centres) in the area of Theology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Page 1 of 5 Engage in strategic research in the area of Theology and seek funding for such research. Publish in the area of Theology. Supervise and direct student research at undergraduate, taught MA, research MA and research Ph.D. levels. RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES The general responsibilities of an Assistant Lecturer in the Institute include the following: membership of Boards and Committees, academic planning at Institutional and School level, programme, pathway and module design, coordination and development, working with other members of the School in a collaborative manner, promoting interdisciplinary co-operation across the Institute’s Schools and Research Centres, enhancing academic cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science of Dublin City University, lecturing / tutoring at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, providing student consultation and feedback, supervising teaching practice and other placements, setting assignments and terminal written examination papers, correcting assignments and marking examination scripts, moderating research papers, minor theses and supervising research theses, contributing to the Institute’s outreach, distance learning and e-learning initiatives, assisting Registry with relevant aspects of examination and academic administration at programme and module level, contributing to the promotion of the Institute’s programmes, keeping abreast of developments in their areas of expertise and the publishing of material in these areas, undertaking such other cognate tasks as may be assigned by the Director or the Head of School. APPLICANT PROFILE (Details of the following must be clearly included in your application) Applications are invited from candidates who: Page 2 of 5 Hold appropriate academic qualifications in Theology, including a completed Doctoral Degree, with primary expertise in Systematic Theology, Have a record of research and publications in Theology, Can promote excellence in the study of Theology, Exhibit a research interest and teaching experience in at least two of the following areas: Sacramental Theology, Theological Anthropology, Christology, Eschatology, Theology of Ministry, Interreligious dialogue. (Details of such interest and experience should be included in your application), Exhibit an interest and competence in the pedagogical issues relating to the teaching of Theology to young adults and throughout the life-cycle and in the pastoral dimension of theological reflection, Exhibit awareness of current developments in Theology and enhance the Institute’s capacity in the area of Theology Are committed to a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach to the study of Theology, Have demonstrable high level communication, teamwork, interpersonal skills and administrative skills, Exhibit competence in ICT skills of relevance to teaching, learning, research and related administration at third level. Commencement Date 1st September 2013 Salary and Conditions This is an academic post and forms part of the Institute’s core staffing numbers for the purposes of the Government’s Employment Control Framework. Staff are employees of the Institute. The post is offered on the basis of a three year fixed term contract on the Institute’s Assistant Lecturer salary scale. For a successful applicant who is not a new entrant to the public sector the salary is €33,622 to €53,805(12 points). The salary for a successful applicant who is a new entrant or not already a public sector worker will be subject to a 10% reduction in accordance with current Government requirements. In such circumstances Page 3 of 5 the salary scale is €30,260 to €48,425 (12 points). In this case appointment will be made at the first point of the reduced scale. It should be further noted that the above scales do not reflect any reduction that may be required in the context of the implementation of salary reductions either under or in the context of Croke Park II. Qualifying staff of the Institute are included in the Dublin Diocesan Pension Scheme. This is a private pension scheme. All non-probationary staff of the Institute participate in the Institute’s Performance Management and Development System (PMDS). The Institute expects all staff to actively engage in continuing professional development and supports such engagement through a number of initiatives including the provision of skills workshops, staff development seminars and on-going in-service training.
