Identifying Properties of Pure Substances
Objective:
to use a list of properties to identify some unknown pure substances.
Materials:
safety glasses
observation table
table 1.2 on the board
vials of unknown substances
table 1 Properties Observed With the Senses (page 90 textbook)
microscope
Procedure:
1. Put on your safety goggles and briefly examine the pure substances more carefully.
2. View each substance under a microscope and make a drawing of what you see.
3. Use observation table to record all observations.
Discussion:
1. Which substances did you have difficulty identifying, if any. Why?
2. How was observing crystal shape helpful?
3. What other properties could we use to help us identify the unknowns?
