MONASH ABROAD - OUTGOING STUDENTS - STUDENT CHECKLIST CONSIDERING STUDY ABROAD OR EXCHANGE Contact Monash Abroad and attend a study abroad information session. http://www.monash.edu.au/students/studyabroad/info-sessions.html The study abroad or exchange approval/assessment process could take up to 4 weeks (sometimes longer depending on the credit assessment). Students are advised to submit their applications 6 months before the proposed exchange. Research the overseas institution, the unit offerings and availability of units prior to submitting your application to the Faculty of Business and Economics. Incomplete applications will not be accepted and you will be asked to resubmit the application with the correct information. Language Study Abroad Programs (including in-country programs) The following is to be read in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts selection criteria for the Language Study Abroad programs. Students enrolled in a degree administered by the Faculty of Business and Economics who want to undertake a Language Study Abroad program must meet the Faculty of Business and Economics eligibility criteria for study abroad or exchange. Exception – BA/BCom: Students enrolled in the double degree Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Commerce applying for a Language Study Abroad program to be credited towards the Arts component of the double degree will be assessed according to the Faculty of Arts academic requirement. ELIGIBILITY TO STUDY ABROAD OR EXCHANGE You have achieved at least an overall credit average of 60% (all unit attempts including fails). Check with your faculty course advisor to ensure you have space within your degree program to undertake study abroad. Undergraduate: You have completed a minimum of 48 Monash credit points. Study abroad or exchange is not normally permitted for the final semester of study. The overall average requirement may be waived by the Dean’s nominee if a credit average (60%) has been achieved in the most recently completed 48 credit points and an explanation for the earlier poor academic performance has been provided in writing to the Faculty of Business and Economics student services office on your home campus. Monash College units or credit for units completed at other institutions do not count towards these totals and will not be considered when assessing eligibility. Students must enrol/complete an equivalent full-time study load whilst on the Abroad/ Exchange program. Graduate: You will have completed 48 Monash credit points at the time of departure. Name of contact person for the o/s institutions exchange program. Check with Monash Abroad for the percentage average required for individual institutions. What units does the o/s institution allow study abroad/exchange students to complete? What is the closing date of the o/s institution for study abroad/exchange applications? Note: Some US institutions require at least a 70% average to be eligible to enrol. SELECTING AND SUBMITTING YOUR STUDY PLAN Decide on the semester and year you intend to study abroad. Ensure the units you select to study are offered in the semester in which you wish to study. Undergraduate: Ensure the units selected are at the appropriate study level (ie. undergraduate or postgraduate). Students cannot study honours, research or postgraduate level units. Graduate: Students cannot study undergraduate units. Download the Monash Abroad Exchange application form. http://www.monash.edu.au/students/studyabro ad/apply/exchange.html DOCUMENTATION THAT MUST BE INCLUDED WITH YOUR APPLICATION A detailed o/s institution unit outline for each unit listed. The unit outline must include the following information: A week by week schedule of topics, readings and discussions. Prescribed textbooks, references and recommended readings for the unit. A breakdown of assessment (ie. type of assessment and percentage of assessment: 50% assignment, 50% exam etc). The unit weighting (ie. unit level, credit point value, number of contact hours per week). Unit outlines are usually available online. Make sure the outlines include all details required. If the information is not available on the web contact the unit leader and request a full unit outline. Please see the sample email for requesting information. When requesting information use the correct terminology for that institution to ensure you receive the correct information. The grading scale used by the o/s institution. Additional overseas institution course information required: Entry requirements Number of weeks in the semester Normal full time load per semester Monash Abroad – Outgoing Students – Faculty of Business and Economics Student Checklist SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION Complete pages 1 and 2 of the application and submit the form together with the required documentation to the Faculty of Business and Economics student services office on your home campus. The Faculty of Business and Economics will accept up to 2 study abroad applications. Your initial application should include at least 8 unit outlines. APPLICATION NOT APPROVED You will be notified via your Monash student email with an explanation of the reasons why your application has not been approved. Reasons for not approving an application are normally if you do not meet the eligibility requirements or do not have enough space in your degree. APPLICATION APPROVED You will be notified of the approval and credit assessment decision via your Monash student email. You will be need to collect the completed application form from the Business and Economics student services counter on your home campus and submit it to the Monash Abroad office (level 1, Campus centre, Clayton campus) to complete the study abroad or exchange process. Once you have enrolled into your units at the overseas institution, send a confirmation email to the Faculty of Business and Economics Student Services office listing all units that you have enrolled in so that these units can be added to your student record. When you receive final results for the units you completed at the overseas institution you will need to submit a certified copy of these results to the Faculty of Business and Economics student services office on your home campus and to the Monash Abroad office. Sample e-mail to send to the unit leader requesting unit information: Dear Mr/Ms/Prof/Dr <Surname>, I am currently completing a degree at Monash University and I am applying for study abroad/exchange study to your University in <teaching period and year>. Could you please send me the most recent unit description for <unit code, unit title>? My home institution requires the syllabus to assess for credit approval.
