Leisure Studies Program Goals and Objectives
1. Goal: Demonstrate competencies such as planning, problem solving, and decision
making needed for adapting to a changing world
Objectives:
(a) At least one assignment in each upper division course (30000 and 40000 levels)
in the RPTM core should require an exercise of planning, problem solving, and
decision making
(b) Successful completion (passing grades) of all upper division courses (30000 and
40000 levels) in the RPTM core
2. Goal: Plan, promote, facilitate and evaluate recreation and sport experiences based on
people’s needs and wants in order to help them achieve higher level of
physical and emotional well-being
Objectives:
(a) RPTM 36075 Program Design and Evaluation should have a clearly specified
content relating to planning, promoting, facilitating and evaluating recreation and
sport experiences based on people’s needs and wants
(b) Successful completion (passing grades) of RPTM 46030 Dynamics of Leisure
Behavior
(c) At least one course in each concentration should have an assignment showing
application of planning, promoting, facilitating and evaluating recreation and
sport experiences based on people’s needs and wants
3. Goal: Demonstrate skills and competencies needed to work effectively in political
and bureaucratic systems and organizations
Objectives:
(a) At least one guest speaker is invited to describe working effectively in political
and bureaucratic systems and organizations in RPTM 16000 Foundations of
Recreation and Leisure
(b) Successful completion (passing grades) of RPTM 46060 Administration of
Leisure Services, 46090 Internship Seminar, and RPTM 46092 Internship in
Recreation
4. Goal: Understand the biopsychosocical aspects of human behavior in the context of
leisure and be able to administer appropriate experiences to improve all
domains of human functioning
Objectives:
(a) Successful completion (passing grades) of RPTM 26030 Recreation Group
Leadership, 36040 Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Leisure Services,
36075 Program Design and Evaluation, and 46030 Dynamics of Leisure Behavior
(b) At least one assignment in RPTM 36075 Program Design and Evaluation should
require students to demonstrate appropriate knowledge or skills for improving
human functioning in various domains
5. Goal: Demonstrate skills in managing, financing, marketing, programming, leading
and evaluating recreation and sport
Objectives:
(a) Successful completion (passing grades) of RPTM 46060 Administration of
Leisure Services
(b) At least one assignment in RPTM 46060 Administration of Leisure Services
should require students to demonstrate knowledge or skills in managing,
financing, marketing, programming, leading and evaluating recreation and sport
(c) RPTM 46092 Internship in Recreation should require experiences in managing,
financing, marketing, programming, leading and evaluating recreation and sport
(d) The internship manual should have a clear statement that demonstration of skills
in managing, financing, marketing, programming, leading and evaluating
recreation and sport is required in internship
6. Goal: Promote and provide integrated leisure services to persons who have been
excluded from the mainstream of society including persons with physical,
social, cognitive, and emotional disabilities as well as member of diverse
ethnic groups, the disadvantaged and those in the later stages of the life cycle
Objectives:
(a) RPTM 16000 Foundations of Recreation and Leisure should have a specific
content relating to the history, philosophy and service institutions of inclusion and
integration with respect to persons with physical, social, cognitive, and emotional
disabilities as well as member of diverse ethnic groups, the disadvantaged and
those in the later stages of the life cycle
(b) Successful completion (passing grades) of LER diversity requirement with a
domestic focus
(c) Successful completion (passing grades) of RPTM 36040 Inclusion of People with
Disabilities in Leisure Services and 36085 Leisure and Culture
(d) Promote Jill Marsey Award for an outstanding TR student by announcing the
Award in RPTM classes and publicly presenting the award
7. Goal: Demonstrate skills and knowledge needed for working in an international
global community and be able to provide recreation and sport services to a
multicultural constituency
Objectives:
(a) Successful completion (passing grades) of LER diversity requirement with a
global focus
(b) Invite an international guest to speak about recreation and sport in the home
country or a faculty person to speak about her/his international involvement at
least once a year
8. Goal: Develop an understanding, awareness and appreciation of the natural world
including the relationship among all living and non-living things, and to
promote an environmental ethic for their preservation and protection
Objectives:
(a) Present the essence of understanding and appreciation of the natural world and
the outdoors, and promote environmental ethics in RPTM 16000 Foundations of
Recreation and Leisure
(b) Offer RPTM 26081 Principles of Outdoor Recreation and 46070 Park Planning
every year
(c) Invite a guest speaker to present the importance of preservation and protection of
natural resources
9. Goal: Develop an appreciation and fondness for recreation and sport research and
acquisition of such knowledge for their own sake
Objectives:
(a) Successful completion (passing grades) of PEP 25068 Measurement and
Evaluation
(b) At least one course in each concentration should have an emphasis on research
through instruction and assignment
(c) Promote student participation in conference research symposiums
(d) The RPTM faculty should facilitate individual investigations
(e) The RPTM faculty should seek opportunities for undergraduate and graduate
research
