Enderle-Severson Transition Rating Scales: Third Edition (ESTR-III)
The Enderle-Severson Transition Rating Scales: Third Edition is a criterion–referenced instrument that provides
detailed assessment of student performance in five transition areas (Employment, Recreation and Leisure, Home
Living, Community Participation, and Post Secondary Education). The ESTR-III can be used with individuals of any
age and is most useful with learners with moderate to severe disabilities. Analysis of individual subscale items will be
used to identify the learner’s strengths, areas requiring assistance and areas that the individual is not participating in
at this time. Items where the learner is “not participating at this time” (score of 0), should be targeted for
instruction/participation or the acceptance that they will require long-term ongoing assistance from adult services.
Items indicated as “participates but needs assistance” (score of 1) should be prioritized for instruction. Items reported
as “performs skill independently and consistently” (score of 2) should be reported as strengths. An overall
percentage will be calculated to determine the student’s proficiency in the transition areas.
