Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre
Community Nursery School
Philosophy Statement
2013 – 2014
Welcome to the Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre Community Nursery School program. Nursery
School provides a smooth transition for preschoolers between the security of the home, and the separation
from parents or a child care provider that comes with the start of Kindergarten. When a child is experiencing
issues around separation and adjusting to the Nursery School setting, parents are encouraged to stay to help
ease the child into our classroom. The staff will promote independence, social interaction and sharing. We
place an emphasis on routines and transitions, which will help prepare children for the shift to the structured
environment of the Kindergarten classroom.
Our stimulating play based program will include planned activities in the following areas: visual art, literacy,
math and science, music, sensory and creative movement. In addition, the daily schedule includes free
playtime for your child to explore our wide selection of toys, puzzles, books, and dramatic play centre. Our
curriculum and classroom is well equipped and designed to promote learning opportunities to enhance your
child's social/emotional, cognitive, fine and gross motor and language development. Our program will assist
children with developing skills that increase school readiness, and encourage active learning. We provide a
daily snack for the children, with provisions of nutritional and dietary restrictions. Parents are welcome to bring
special treats to celebrate an occasion with the children.
We place a strong emphasis on the development of language skills, as children will be encouraged to look at
books, listen to stories, verbalize their feelings and thoughts, and use language to solve social problems and
conflicts. Our goal as educators is to promote self-esteem, the respect of others and the fair treatment of all
people and property. Any forms of discrimination or unfair treatment will not be tolerated and will be resolved
immediately.
Our committed and qualified staff will ensure that your child's first experience at school is positive and provided
in a caring, nurturing and safe environment. It is the role of the teachers to facilitate and promote your child's
ability to learn and socially interact with others. While our work may include a variety of educational and
training opportunities, our supervision policy states that volunteers and student interns do not have
unsupervised access to the children.
Our goal as educators is to foster awareness and inclusiveness of our diverse society, while learning to
understand and appreciate similarities and differences among people. Our stimulating program activities will
include exposure to all areas of diversity: ability, age, appearance, belief, culture, family form, gender,
language, lifestyle, race, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Our teacher’s knowledge of childhood
developmental stages and milestones provides a valuable contribution to our planned program.
Any disciplinary measures will be appropriate to the developmental level of the child and will assist the child in
learning appropriate social behaviour. Our role as educators is to intervene with any misbehaviour by
redirecting the child to another activity, while allowing the child time to regain control of self.
As early childhood educators, we recognize the premium importance of the family's role and influence in the
preschool child's life. Through open and ongoing communication, we wish to support the unique needs of
every child and family in our program to the best of our abilities.
“Play friendly, play safe!”
