Job Description Product Engineer – Composites and Plastic Parts Basic Function: Under the guidance of the Director of Engineering, the Product Engineer will focus on the product engineering of innovative composites and plastic parts for all Masonite exterior door product lines. Principal Accountabilities: 1. 2. 3. 4. The position will be involved in the product engineering efforts of new innovative composite and plastic constructions for exterior doors as well as refining and evaluating existing components and exterior door designs from a product engineering perspective. The position operates as the go to source for all product engineering related aspects (material selection, component engineering and process definition) to meet all application requirements, including codes and compliance requirements, performance testing requirements and costing. This position must work closely with all other functions, the Engineering Team and other Masonite Divisions as applicable. In order to drive product design innovation the position must develop a technical understanding of current and future market needs and all exterior door and door system application requirements to lead the design of differentiated plastics and composite based products. The position must develop a technical understanding of all relevant manufacturing processes including injection molding, SMC molding, extrusion and foam injection to design differentiated products, provide direction to outsourcing, and help solve complex manufacturing problems. Dimension: The Masonite Innovation Center is a diverse mixture of intensive R&D, engineering, laboratory testing and evaluation operations, product performance testing, raw material qualification, and around-the-clock manufacturing operations. It is the technical resource center for the Global Organization. All aspects including many specifically under this job function are strategically critical to Masonite’s business. Position Requirements: 1. 2. BS, preferably MS in Engineering discipline preferably in Plastics Engineering, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering. 5+ years’ experience in product- and process design for engineered components and systems (doors, windows, automotive/ transportation interiors, or similar industries) fabricated from fiberglass, thermoplastics, foams, inorganic materials, other plastic 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. composites and adhesives. Industry experience in a plastics field is required (molding, extrusion, thermo forming, etc.). Prefer background in the engineering of sealing, insulated (thermal & sound), fire resistant composite systems (doors, windows, automotive, appliance, and other building industries) Prefer background in design engineering with composites, plastics, fiberglass, and adhesively bonded systems including understanding failure modes of these materials. Special consideration will be given to applicants with a plastic engineering background and experience. Must be able to engineer a product from scratch using fundamental engineering principles and best practices taking appropriate material selections and construction designs into consideration. Demonstrated success in leading the development and engineering of innovative products that deliver significant business growth Excellent multi-functional project leadership capabilities Working knowledge of common computer drafting tools (AutoCAD, Inventor or similar) and Microsoft Office applications.
