scavenger hunt, explain to the students that this scavenger hunt is a practice for
Friday’s hunt in St. Augustine. By completing the practice scavenger hunt in
the classroom, the students will learn what is expected of them on the field trip
and the proper procedures of conducting a scavenger hunt.
2. Give students the Compass Rose worksheet. Ask them to fill in cardinal
points to use during the scavenger hunt. Remind the students to use the
mnemonic device: Never East Shredded Wheat. Review the directions with
the class to ensure the worksheet is completed accurately.

3. Using the Scavenger hunt from www.st.augustineforkids.com, turn the
classroom into a search for treasure just as Ponce de Leon did in 1513! Before
the students come to class, place the clues around the room (or outside). To
incorporate the compass rose into the curriculum, write the clues so the class
has to use North/South/East/West to find the treasure. (Example: “The next
clue is 3 steps North of the teacher’s desk”) After the students have completed
the computer lab activity on Google Maps:
a) Split the class into groups- no more than 5 students in a group
b) Give each group will begin from a different starting point.
c) Give each group their first clue and send them on their way.
d) The first team to come back with all of their “treasure” wins!
4. After completing the scavenger hunt, the students will use facts from the
clues to add dates to their timelines. Easter Sunday 1513- Ponce De Leon
sighted Florida, 1514 King Ferdinand appointed Ponce de Leon governor of
Florida, Ponce de Leon died in 1521

Assessment
Pre Assessment:
Review material from day 2
Google Earth:
The teacher will assess the students by the checking their understanding of
cardinal directions based on the answers given on the worksheet about the
lighthouse location. The teacher will also monitor the students as they
complete assignment.
Scavenger Hunt:
Before the scavenger hunt begins, the teacher will check for understanding of
the cardinal directions by having the students complete the compass rose
worksheet individually. The teacher will then go over the worksheet as a class
to ensure the students have the right answers. The teacher will observe the
students assessment informally initially by their participation in the scavenger
hunt. The teacher will also be able to tell which students understand the
directions based on if they find their next clues. The students will be able to
monitor their own assessment along the way as well by instantly knowing if
they are going in the right direction based on finding their next clue or not.
Exceptionalities
This lesson can be modified for ESOL students by allowing them to access
Google Maps translated into their native language. The point of this lesson if
for students to further their knowledge of map skills and if the student is not
Social Studies Lesson Plan Template
comfortable searching the internet in English, they can have the option of
searching in their native language. ESOL students can also translate the word
wall into their native language and draw pictures to help remember the
meaning of the word. This lesson is great for children with learning or reading
disabilities because there is not a lot of reading. Much of this assignment is
using the internet. Higher achieving kids will mentor students on their map
skills.
Discussion Notes
-If the Social Studies block time ends before the completion of the Scavenger
hunt, the hunt could always be done during recess.
-Continue map skills throughout the day in the math time block.
