Get It in Gear in the New Year
Psalm 90
“Teach us to number our days…”
I read recently of a gentleman who was shaking hands with a half-dozen folks
he’d never met before at church (HE was the visitor—greeting the locals!!!).
Birthdays This Month

was a hand you could strike a match on, toughened by decades of rugged toil.

you, my friend?" He didn't seem at all hesitant or embarrassed by the
question. "I'm just a couple months shy o' 90." He laughed again as pastor looked him over in
amazement. He had lived through four wars, the Great Depression, sixteen presidents, ninety Midwest
winters (brrr), who knows how many personal hardships, and he was still taking life by the throat. Pastor
had to ask him the secret of his long and productive life. "Hard work and integrity" was his quick reply.
Upon parting company, he looked back over his shoulder and added, "Don't take it easy, young’un. Stay
at it!” The Bible is filled with folks who refused to take it easy. Remember our friend Caleb, who, at age
85, attacked the Anakim in the hill country and successfully drove them out (Josh. 14)? Or Abraham,
who had a baby (well, actually Sarah did) when he was "in his old age" . . . he was 100, she was 90 (Gen.
21)? Or Noah or Moses or Samuel or Anna, the 84-year-old prophetess . . . significant people, every one.
Charles Swindoll says: “Age means zilch. Wrinkles, gray hair, and spots on your hands, less than zilch.
If God chooses to leave you on this old earth, great. If He makes it possible for you to step aside from
your work and move on to new vistas with fresh challenges, that's also great.” Hey, you will not catch

You Took My Parking Space at Church
One day, a man went to visit a church, He got there early, parked his car and got
out. Another car pulled up near the driver got out and said, "I always park there!
You took my place!" The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty
seat and sat down A young lady from the church approached him and stated,
"That's my seat! You took my place!" The visitor was somewhat distressed by
this rude welcome, but said nothing.
After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another
member walked up to him and said, “That’s where I always sit! You took my
place!" The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still He said
nothing.
Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor
stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on
his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him
and called out, "What happened to you?" The visitor replied, as his hat became a
crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, "I took your place."

Portals
For which there is a beginning
For which there is an ending
For which there is a reason
Betwixt these portals much awaits
From which interest sown is harvest reaped
For which great beauty duly attracts
For which to see to hear to taste to feel
By which affinity composes its chosen path
For which in season our turn is granted
For which to know draws inquiry
By which in essence each story unfolds
And for which by reason much remains untold
