Job Purpose:
To contribute to the delivery of a growing number of community street
design projects in Bristol and the South West, helping redesign local streets
and neighbourhoods to create safer and more attractive conditions for walking
and cycling.
Dimensions of job:
The post holder will work closely with senior urban designers in the delivery
of street design projects with a strong emphasis in community engagement.
The post holder will develop street design schemes with a thorough public
engagement process, supporting local communities to ‘reclaim’ urban space,
giving them greater control over their immediate environment and supporting
them to work together to improve quality of life for everyone living in or
visiting the project areas.
In 2015 Sustrans will deliver two innovative street design projects as part of
Bristol Green Capital: Southmead Green Streets, a project that will help
residents create rain gardens in Southmead to calm traffic and improve how
their streets look, and Street Pockets, a modular, freestanding and moveable
toolkit to be used by communities to create street pockets that will instantly
change the feel and use of any street in the city.
The post holder will be the main contact for the Street Pockets and will
work closely with the Senior Urban Designer to deliver the public
engagement and the design of Southmead Green Streets.
The post holder will work closely with local residents, businesses and
schools to deliver workshops and street trials to try out ideas, with a view
to facilitate more permanent change.
The post holder will also be involved in the delivery of more traditional
schemes, providing designs and graphics for other projects as required, as
part of the South West infrastructure team.

Key Responsibilities (not in ranking order):
1.
To design and deliver a participative design process with local people,
engaging communities as widely as possible
2.
To develop appropriate design materials, including plans, technical
drawings and 3D visuals;

To design and deliver creative and eye-catching community
engagement activities and events, such as consultation events, street
parties, etc.

To deliver the temporary trialling of proposed interventions, including
event management and overseeing installation

To foster, promote and develop successful relationships with residents
and other community stakeholders, including recruiting and training
local champions
To ensure effective local partnerships are developed and maintained in
order to support wider project objectives.
To proactively engage in the design and delivery of Southmead Green
Streets and Street Pockets, addressing local traffic and transport
concerns through community-led street redesign
To participate in project meetings with partners and other stakeholders
To support the Senior Project Officer and the Regional Infrastructure
Manager in:
 The overall project management including scheduling and budget
management
 the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of the outcomes and
outputs of the programme;
To promote the projects on social media and work with the Sustrans
press and publicity team to support the generation of positive media
based upon Sustrans project work
To provide support for other related projects/staff if appropriate and
required as part of the South West infrastructure team
To support and comply with the organisation’s Policy for the
management of Health and Safety;
To work in accordance with the arrangements described in the
organisation’s health and safety management system including any
project or department specific requirements
To undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade, the post and
capabilities of the post holder as directed by the line manager.
Working Conditions:
The post will be based in Bristol with regular trips to local project sites.
There will also be some travel required, including visits to other Sustrans
projects, with some overnights away from home. Due to the nature of the
role some work outside normal office hours will be required.
Special Note:
This job description does not form part of the contract of employment, but

Strong administrative skills.
Appreciation of wider urban design issues and

Computer literate (knowledge of word-processing,
databases, spreadsheets packages, internet and website
