Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop Series Presented by MAX Teaching August 21, November 6, January 18, March 5, 8:00 – 2:30 p.m. Cuyahoga Valley Career Center, Brecksville, Ohio Sponsored by HSTW NE Ohio Region and CVCC HSTW NE Ohio Region and Cuyahoga Valley Career Center are teaming up to offer HSTW and MMGW sites in northeast Ohio a four session Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop Series. To build capacity for schoolwide implementation, register a team to include a district/building administrator, literacy chair/focus team member, and one or more CT, academic and non-academic teachers. Featured Facilitator: Todd Luke, Vice-President and MAX Teaching Consultant, will facilitate sessions for district/building administrators, teacher-leaders and teams of CT, academic and non-academic teachers. Session 1: August 21, 2012 Leading Successful Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Initiatives & Intro to MAX Teaching Administrators and teacher-leaders will: Examine “What really works!”in leading successful reading and writing across the curriculum initiative. Practice using tools and protocols to monitor data and progress in literacy instructional practices. Review online resources and opportunities for enhanced teacher professional development. Teachers and teacher teams will : Assess current classroom literacy instructional practices. Demonstrate Common Core State Standards (CCSS) research-based reading and writing strategies to increase student engagement in academic and career technical classrooms using MAX Teaching. Describe successful schoolwide implementation of reading and writing across the curriculum. Todd Luke Vice President and Consultant, MAX Teaching Specializing in Literacy Across the Curriculum Todd is helping to implement change in the areas of teaching, thinking, literacy and the Common Core Standards. In the early 90's, he began his career in education as a CT instructor at Lenape Technical School and later served as an administrator. Since 2001, Todd’s consulting services for MAX Teaching has gained him experience with administrators and teachers in rural, urban and suburban schools in over 38 states. In 2008, Todd was promoted to Vice-President for MAX Teaching. Before beginning his teaching career, Todd worked as Senior Staff Technician at Aluminum Company of America. Updated: July 7, 2012 Session 2: November 6, 2012 Reading and Writing Instructional Approaches to Meet Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Teachers and teacher teams will: Refine existing literacy instructional practices. Create new lessons, units and rubrics for all levels of learners using MAX Teaching literacy strategies. Plan to deliver new CCSS lessons/units using a team teaching approach. Session 3: January 18, 2013 Monitoring Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum & Reading and Writing Instructional Approaches to Meet CCSS, continued Administrators and teacher-leaders will: Identify “Look Fors” when monitoring classroom walk-throughs for reading/writing across the curriculum.. Practice protocols for peer observations and feedback and useful tools in overseeing this process. Teachers and teacher teams will: Debrief teaching experiences with new lessons/units using MAX Teaching literacy strategies. Refine literacy lessons/units and discuss next steps. Session 4: March 5, 2013 Planning for Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Teachers and teacher teams will: Share lessons and units developed and plans to implement reading and writing across the curriculum by CT cluster, academic, non-academic areas or schoolwide. Strengthen leadership capacity to implement a comprehensive schoolwide literacy initiative.
