Guidelines and Rules inspections KWPN 2012
These are the Guidelines and Rules for the KWPN-inspections in
the UK only
Members
Only members of the KWPN can take part in events/inspections.
Name
Horses participating in inspection must be registered in the name of their
current owner.
Passport/registration paper
At the inspection the original registration paper and passport (if
applicable) must be presented.
Registration
Mares must be registered with the KWPN in one of the following so-called
books:
- Foal book
- Register A
- Studbook
Mares that are registered with a KWPN acknowledged studbook may also
take part in studbook inspections. (See attachment for KWPN
acknowledged studbooks)
Mares that are Register A or registered with a KWPN acknowledged
studbook may be presented for studbook entry (and can also obtain the
Ster-predicate) if they meet the (additional) conditions. For additional
information about those conditions see under “criteria for studbook entry”
or contact the KWPN office at +31.341.255550 or e-mail:
UKWPN@kwpn.nl.
Only KWPN registered geldings or unapproved stallions can participate for
ster predicate or IBOP.
Non-KWPN registered geldings or unapproved stallions may not
participate.
Foals
-
must be registered with the KWPN in either
Foalbook
Register A
Register B
Foals must be at least one (1) month old at the time of the inspection.
N.B. The birth-certificate must have been send to the KWPN office
before entering.
Yearling fillies, two year old fillies must be registered with the KWPN in
either
- Foalbook
- Register A
- Register B
Entry
The entry form must be completely filled in and sent to the Secretary
KWPN, as mentioned on the entry form.
Influenza vaccination
Every horse that participates in a KWPN inspection must have a current
influenza vaccination. If necessary please ask your veterinarian for further
information. In order to enter KWPN events the last documented
vaccination must have taken place within the past year. The vaccination
certificate must be shown on demand.
Safety
The health of a horse participating in a inspection may not threaten the
health of other horses, staff, owners or the spectators that are present at
the inspection. The judges have the right to excuse those horses that
could be a threat to other horses, staff, owners or spectators from further
participation in the inspection.
Horse shoes
All three-year old and older horses may wear shoes. Shoes are forbidden
in all other classes.
Finances
The entry fees for participation in the inspection must be paid at the show
in cash.
Handlers
The horses will be brought in the ring by a handler accompanied by a
helper. More than two people per horse are not allowed in the ring. During
‘free movement’ and ‘free jumping’ only one handler is allowed in the
special ring.
Clothing
The handler must be dressed in white, e.g. white T-shirt and a white pair
of trousers. In order to match, the tennis shoes should also be white. The
helper also must wear appropriate clothing.
Use of whips
The use of whips can frighten a horse. If the use of a whip decreases the
chances of judging the horse well, (the horse could be too tense, won’t
trot well, etc.) the judges may ask the handler to show the horse again
without the whip or ask the helper not to go behind the horse with the
whip. Additional gear attached to a whip or other objects are not allowed
except for a small rattle.
Bridle and harness
Riding horses wear a brown or black bridle. A nice white rope, lead-rein is
advisable, (if possible no lines or reins with chains). Leg protectors are not
allowed when the horse is presented in-hand. Horses that participate in
the free jumping or free movement arena may wear tendon protectors on
the front legs (no bandages or so-called jumping boots). The judges have
the right to ask that the tendon protectors should be removed.
Bridle numbers
The use of bridle numbers is compulsory. Bridle numbers are available at
all inspections. It can be possible that there will be a deposit charged for
the numbers. The numbers must be attached to both sides of the bridle.
When showing foals the numbers must be attached to the dam’s bridle.
Self made numbers may not be used.
Artificial aids
No artificial means of enhancing the conformation or movement are
allowed. The use of an artificial hair piece in the tail or mane is
acceptable.
Drugs
Horses must be free of forbidden substances at KWPN inspection and
other activities. All horses will be subject to drug testing. This testing is
done under the strict responsibility of the KWPN board according to the
established doping rules. The testing will be done by KWPN appointed
veterinarians. Forbidden substances are described in the doping rules.
Violation of these rules will be punished according to the articles of the
disciplinary committee of KWPN.
Veterinary treatment
Every treatment, i.e. surgery, drugs or medicines or other treatment that
influence the original health of a horse or can influence a horse, must be
disclosed at least 24 hours prior to the start of the Inspection. On this
basis of this disclosure the judges may decide to have the horse presented
at another inspection.
Injury
A mare may still be entered into the studbook if her movement is irregular
due to an injury. However, a veterinarian statement stating that the
irregularity is temporary and not inheritable must be submitted. The mare
will be judged in-hand but cannot participate in free- movement or
jumping.

the inspection for studbook entry. These horses need to be
registered with a EU-warmblood-riding-type studbook. Subject to
acceptance.
Scorings form dressage horses
During the stud book entry of every horse a scorings form is made. This
form exists of upper and lower beam characteristics. In the lower beam
the exterior and movement items are divided in different traits. Marks
between “a” and ”i” will be filled in. “e” is the average and starting point.
The exterior items can be more or less extreme and that will be filled in.
In the upper beam a judgement is given for the exterior of the horse and
movement; in a scale of 40 to 100 points (in steps of 5). The mark for
movement in the upper beam is an average of the marks for walk, trot,
canter and posture. For the basic movements marks will be given
separately (a scale of 40 to 100 points, in steps of 5) on the form.
Criteria for studbook entry for dressage horses
To enter the studbook the horse must apply to the following criteria:
 Age: three years or older
 Height: at least 1.58m, 15.2hh
 Appropriate to the breeding type and movements
 Free of (heritable) defects
o Heritable eye defects; small or not well developed eye
o Over- or underbite
o Defects of joints, possibly in combination with defects in the
exterior and/or way of standing of the legs
o Different shape of the hoofs
o Insufficient way of moving
 At least 50 points for conformation and 50 points for movement in
the upper beam.
Mares being Register A or having a KWPN acknowledged registration
paper can enter the studbook as all additional criteria are fulfilled.
Before the studbook entry will be final, the horse has to apply to the
criteria which its sire did not apply to.
The criteria:
 Performance tests (subject to the sire of the horse)
 X-ray examination (subject to the sire of the horse)
 Laryngoscopic (roaring) examination (subject to the sire of the horse)
For questions about that please contact the KWPN office +31. 341-255550
or e-mail: UKWPN@kwpn.nl.
PROCEDURE STUDBOOK ENTRY DRESSAGE HORSES
1. Identity control, description, teeth, height.
2. Secondly inspection takes place on hard surface; 5 meter wide and
30 meter long. Horse has to be shown with bridle in hand. No
bandages or leg protectors are allowed. Procedure as follows: line
up in front of the judges. Judges must be able to see the left side of
the horse clearly. At the direction of the judges the horse turns right
and walks about half the lane away from and then back to the
judges. The handler is on the left side of the horse and turns the
horse to the right. Next the horse is trotted away from and back to
the judges in a straight line using the entire lane. Then line up
again, but now the right side of the horse in front of the judges.
3. After inspection on the hard surface judgement of free moving
(walk, trot, canter, posture) will follow in an indoor riding hall at the
same day. Here the horse must show itself in free moving. After the
individual inspection and the inspection of the free moving, the
horses are gathered again in groups for the final judgement and
completing the final upper beam in the indoor riding hall. The judges
chairman announces the results of the upper beam and gives a
short explanation. The owner can apply for further explanation of
the results.

Free jumping
Free jumping takes place in an indoor riding hall (20 x 40 meters) or in
a so called cage (minimum sizes 15 x 30 meters). Mirrors must be put
away or covered. In the ring a couloir will be made. The last fence
must be replaceable in order to change distances. The length of the
fence bars is 3 meters at least. The fences must be safe and all must
be changeable, see drawing which is enclosed.
The judges have the right to alter the distances between the fences.
The maximum height of the oxer is 1.15m, the maximum width is
1.00m (for three year olds). For older horses the fence can be built
higher and/or wider. Foal mares are not allowed to participate in free
jumping, because of security reasons.

Exemption
During the studbook inspection exemption of free movement is possible
if the mare has the predicate sport (dressage) or has finished an
IBOP/EPTM where talent for dressage is judged and fully assessed.
During the studbook inspection exemption of free jumping is possible if
the mare has the predicate sport (jumping) or has finished an
IBOP/EPTM where talent for dressage is judged and fully assessed.
Judgement procedure of studbook mares for higher predicate
If a horse is already a studbook horse, it can come to the grading for a
higher predicate (ster). The procedure is the same as studbook entry
except for the outline and teeth check and under beam awarding will
not take place anymore.
Judgement procedure of foals
Foals are judged as follows: line up, walk and trot (and possibly
canter). They must be accompanied by their dams. The dam must be
shown in hand. After the individual presentation and judgement, the
foals are gathered in their group and placed according the quality
conditions.
During the judgement in the group the dams and foals must be led in
hand whilst circulating in the ring. After the final judgement, the judges
will explain their decision.
Judgement procedure of yearling fillies and two year old fillies
Fillies are judged as follows: line up, walk and trot in hand. After the
individual presentation and judgement, the horses are gathered in their
group and placed according the quality conditions.
After the final judgement, the judges will explain their decision.
Judgement procedure of ster mares for higher predicate
Mares are judged as follows: line up, walk and trot in hand. After the
individual presentation and judgement, the mares are gathered in their
group and placed according the quality conditions.
After the final judgement, the judges will explain their decision.
Judgement procedure of geldings and unapproved stallions for
ster predicate
This is the same judgement procedure as the procedure for mares for
studbook entry.
Procedure for horses in the advisory class
Class open for thoroughbred mares (three years and older) and horses
that, due to their registration cannot enter the studbook. Class is
meant to provide breeding advice. Mares are judged on hard surface on
conformation and movement. Judges are allowed to judge these mares
in free movement also and possible in free jumping.
Criteria STER predicate
A valuation on exterior and functionality combined with movements
and voluntary with free jumping for 3 year old and older mares,
geldings and not approved stallions. During the studbook inspection the
judges decide about awarding. At least the height of the horse is
