CELEBRATING WOMEN: ACHIEVEMENTS, PROGRESS AND LASTING LEGACY
The Department of Arts and Culture is running an exciting Award for Women Artists (DAC-AWA) in celebration of women’s
achievements all over the globe. Artworks should celebrate, in particular, South African Women’s achievements, progress and
lasting legacy. This opportunity is open to all South African Women fine artists over the age of 21 years.
Prizes will be awarded as follows:
1st – R 30 000
2nd – R 15 000
3rd – R 5 000
T H E M E:
THE ARTWORK MUST REFLECT OR HAVE AS INSPIRATION
THE UNIQUE HISTORY AND LIVES OF WOMEN IN SOUTH AFRICA
Artworks must reflect or have as inspiration the unique history and lives of women in South Africa. The interpretation of the
above is open – reference can be made to such achievements and legacies as:




1956 Women’s March to Pretoria in protest against the ‘dompas’
Resilience of Afrikaner Women in Concentration Camps
1976 The Role of Mothers during the Education unrests
Women Leaders and Democracy
AWARDS PROCEDURE AND CRITERIA
Unlike any other awards, the recognition of your artwork will be determined by your entry participation and not by nomination. Thus:

The ART AWARD is open to all women fine artists of 21 years and older.
All entrants must be South African citizens.
The following artworks will be accepted: Paintings, Sculptures, Drawings, Photographs and Mixed media (collage, etc.): OILS /
WATERCOLOUR / ACRYLIC / MIXED MEDIA, etc.
No technical or architectural drawings, installation or ceramics, pottery or other craft should be submitted.
Works should not exceed 100x100cm.
Sculptures should be limited to 40x60cm: with a height not more than 80cm; and weight not more than 15kg, thus allowing for
easier transportation and handling.
The artwork must reflect, or, have as inspiration, the unique history and lives of women from all walks of life, all over the globe
generally, and South Africa in particular.
Artworks must have been executed in the last 24 months.
Only one entry per artist will be considered.
The attached entry form must be completed and submitted with the artwork.
A brief description of the concept of the artwork as well as a colour photograph (please write artist name at the back) thereof
must be submitted.
A brief CV/Profile and passport-size photograph (please write artist name on back of photograph) of the artist should be
submitted.
Clearly labeled artworks should be submitted to the Provincial collection points from: Monday, 10 December 2007 to Friday,
11 January 2008 to allow time for provincial and national adjudication sessions for the award.
Transportation to, and, collection of work from, the various Provincial collection points is for the artist’s costs.
The decision of the adjudication panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into in this regard.
The adjudication panel of 5 members comprising of experts will adjudicate the entries.
DAC reserves the right not to appoint a winner in a category if the panel feels that the standard is not adequate.
The three works that receive the Award prizes will become the property of the DAC. The works will become part of the DAC art
collection and will be exhibited in the building occupied by the DAC for a period of time as decided by the DAC.
A number of artworks will be selected for an exhibition. After the exhibition these artworks will be returned to the artists.
All other participating artists will be responsible to collect their artworks from the adjudication venue, participants will be
informed in good time when to collect artworks.
PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION


Provincial collection points are currently being set up.
Please call the award organizers for information about the collection point nearest to you.
Note: To honour thousands of unnamed women that marched to the Union Buildings in August 1956, all artists who enter the
Art Awards, (whether selected or not for the final exhibition) will be listed on a colophon print in the publication:

PROVINCIAL DEPARTMENT
The entries from the Western Cape visual artists must be submitted at the office
of the Western Cape: Department Cultural Affairs and Sport. Clearly labeled
artworks should be submitted to the Provincial collection point from - Monday, 10
December 2007 to Friday, 11 January 2008 to allow time for provincial and
national adjudication sessions for the award. Collections will only be accepted
from 8h00 till 15h00.
