Seeking business facing experts in technology research development and
commercialization, marketing and management
Lancaster University is embarking on a new initiative to leverage its global reach for
increasing the level of international collaboration between UK and Chinese companies, via
collaborative research, development and commercialisation. Guangdong Provincial
Department of Science & Technology (GPOST) and Lancaster University (LU) will work
together and with other UK and Chinese partners as appropriate, to develop a series of
specific business-to-business partnerships between UK Chinese technological companies.
This project will involve, in the next 4-5 years, a bilateral collaborative industrial R&D
programme and joint activities in training, promoting and developing international
partnerships. These partnerships will increase UK and Chinese company collaboration in the
development of new technology-based products, processes and services for selling on global
market.
This has been made possible by the award of over £4m in funding from the Higher
Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Lancashire County Council.
We are seeking to build an international team, with hubs in both the UK and China and are
now seeing to recruit 3 individuals to undertake primarily China-based roles.
The post-holders will be core in the development and delivery of the overall project which
will provide high growth, technology-based SMEs with access to long-term support and
resources to enable them to develop their leadership, innovation and collaborative capacity
and undertake substantive, long-term programmes of collaborative R&D to underpin new
product development with UK and Chinese academic and business partners.
We are looking for team players who, together, will have strengths in working with
businesses, an understanding of knowledge transfer and the ability to devise new ways to
help companies innovate, strong technology skills and an empathy with technology-inspired
innovation and growth. All the three posts will be based in China but will involve travel in
the UK and China.
The China Catalyst Project
This £5.1 million initiative includes a broad range of areas across Lancaster University
including; science and technology, design, management and the Confucius Institute, with
key partners in Guangdong Province, China. Over a period of four years, the project will
engage with several hundred technology- focused small and medium sized enterprises
(SMEs) in the UK and facilitate 80 of these to develop collaborative research and
development for new product development through robust partnerships with businesses
located in the Guangdong Province. The UK companies will develop specific collaborative
project with one or more Chinese academic and/or business partners. These projects will be
focusing on the development of new products for international markets, including
China. This will be enabled by the resourcing of graduate-caliber teams with science,
technology, management and design expertise, to work with UK and Chinese partners on
specific collaborative projects in both the UK and China.
The project is funded by HEFCE, participant business contributions, Lancashire County
Council and the Guangdong Provincial Office for Science & Technology. Key partners will
include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, UK Trade & Investment, China-Britain Business
Council and the Technology Strategy Board. Priority technology areas have been identified
which match key UK growth sectors to the key industrial sectors of Guangdong Province:
energy, environmental protection, new vehicle technology, materials, photonics, ICT,
biotechnology and advanced manufacturing.
The UK China Catalyst Team
This is a very challenging, exciting and high-profile new initiative. Collectively the team we
employ will have a broad experience, ranging from marketing and technology transfer and
commercialisation to collaborative research with industry and research organisations in
China. In addition, excellent client and project management skills are required. We have
described the tasks we expect the team to be capable of in each job descriptions these are
grouped into two manager roles and a project administrator. One of the mangers will focus
on marketing and technology commercialisation and business engagement, another will be
mainly responsible for facilitate technology R&D but we expect and hope for a great deal of
overlap between these roles from the individuals we employ. This China team, reporting to
a Project Director based in UK, will work closely with academics, knowledge exchange
professionals and students within Lancaster University, Guangdong Provincial Department
of Science and Technology (GPOST), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), other partners in
China, and with LCCP staff recruited in the UK.

Related work will involve the facilitation of international R&D and innovation project,
funding application, and the organization of up to 200 British companies and 100 researcher
and staff team in 2014-2017 for developing new products and services in China.
Principle responsibilities of the post will include:

Identification of technology market in China and recruitment of China-based
technology-based businesses into UK-China business partnerships

Development of collaborative research and development projects, product design
and commercialisation with UK and Chinese businesses. The facilitation of the joint
innovative project, apply project funding in China, deliver the project on time and on
budget


academic staff, company staff and students including site visits.

Support for project staff and students with international logistics, including planning
