Brothers Scale New Heights for Great Lakes on Earth Day
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Two brothers are braving chilly temps, rain, winds and even the
threat of snow atop the roof of their salon for 36 hours to raise awareness and funds for
the Alliance for the Great Lakes this Earth Day.
A live podcast of brothers Scott and TJ Weaver is being broadcast throughout their stay
on the roof of the Douglas J Spa in Okemos. The brothers climbed to the roof at 8 a.m.
this morning and will stay there until 8 p.m. Wednesday -- Earth Day.
“Taking care of our world and its resources is something we take very seriously here at
Douglas J,” says Scott Weaver. “We love this state — we live here and we do business
here. Working with the Alliance for the Great Lakes, a nonprofit in Michigan, is our way of
giving back to it.”
The temperature in Okemos will reach the mid-40s today with rain. The weather outlook
for tonight shows temperatures dropping to the mid-30s and light rain and snow
showers. More of the same is forecast for tomorrow.
The Weavers can be viewed live on the podcast at www.dropscottandtj.com, with live
chat and Twitter links so fans and onlookers can see and communicate with them.
Donations to the Alliance can be made directly from their website.
The brothers have already had visitors to their rooftop shanty – which is protected by
tarps that had to be reinforced early on to ward off the wind and rain, and will be heated
at night with a propane heater. They’re also chatting by phone and twittering.
“Hey Grandma,” Scott could be heard saying early on in their broadcast. “Yeah, we’re OK
… we’re prepared in case we get a little snow up here. Stay warm.”
The salon is a partner of the Aveda salon and spa chain which, in its mission statement
calls on itself and its partners “to set an example of environmental leadership and
responsibility.”
“It's inspiring to see to what lengths some of our supporters will go on behalf of the
Great Lakes,” says Alliance Sustainable Business Director Jonah Smith. “Aveda is truly
dedicated to sustainability, and with salon owners like Scott and T.J. literally leading from
the top-down, it really shows how important all of our actions are to protect that which
we love and need everyday in our lives -- the Great Lakes."
