Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth
7 June 2015 – The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Year B
We are the Body of Christ
Corpus Christi means the body of Christ. As Catholics we believe that the bread and wine
are transformed into the risen body of Jesus Christ. In the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist,
we celebrate the presence of the word of God, who was born in flesh two thousand years
ago and now comes to us under the appearance of bread and wine.
We rightly think of the Eucharist as God’s gift of nourishment for us when we share in the
Body and Blood of the Lord and recognise this as a sublime gift that Jesus has left for us. The
readings for this solemnity also help us think of the Eucharistic mystery in even broader terms.
Firstly, by sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ we are transformed into being more perfect members
of the body of Christ. Thus, sharing in Eucharist is our way of growing more deeply into our own baptismal
identity. Secondly, the Eucharistic mystery includes continually establishing God’s reign, which is
evidenced by healing, reconciliation, and feeding others. Thirdly, the Eucharistic mystery calls forth from
us practical, everyday actions by which we ourselves help establish God’s reign by dying to ourselves for
the sake of others. Finally, the Eucharistic mystery demands a response and so we tithe the gifts given to
us for the sake of others less fortunate. In a real sense the Eucharistic mystery begins at Mass, is expressed
during Communion, and extends to our everyday lives when we live its self-sacrificing demand-response.
The General Instruction on the Roman Missal provides that there be a brief period of silence after
Communion, which encourages us to spend time reflecting on and praising God for the gracious and
wondrous gift of the Body and Blood of Christ. Even if we faithfully do this every mass, we know that we
cannot begin to have sufficient time to reflect on the depths of the mystery or to give sufficient thanks
for it. For this reason it is always appropriate to spend some other devotional time before the Blessed
Sacrament. Our time of adoration and thanksgiving, however, must always flow from the action of the
Eucharist itself and lead us to witness more clearly in our lives the self-giving of Jesus.
As a community, we receive the body of Christ so, as a community, we become the body of Christ. We
are called, not just to worship God in Church, but to be the sign of Christ to others by the way we work
together for others and reach out to society. For when we eat and drink Christ’s true Body and Blood we
become what we eat, so that we can be the self-giving Christ for others.

CONSULTATION ON ACADEMY
CONVERSION MULTI-ACADEMY TRUSTS
Bishop Philip and the diocesan trustees
are circulating a consultation document
on the conversion of schools into the
preferred model of multi-academy trusts.
This document, together with the
response form, is available on the
diocesan website:
www.portsmouthdiocese.org.uk/schools/co
nsultation.php All interested parties are
invited to view this and respond. A series
of meetings will also be held across the
diocese and these are detailed in the
consultation document. Together with
schools, trustees wish to develop a model
that best works in the interests of all
concerned and to plan for appropriate
support that will be needed by schools in
the process. The consultation closes on
14 July 2015.

CDF ANNUAL MASS
The Catholic Disability fellowship is
holding the Annual Mass at St Bede’s,
Popley Way, Basingstoke on 20 June at
1430. On this very special occasion the
Mass will be signed by Dom. Cuthbert
Brogan, the Abbot of Farnborough
Abbey. This is a wonderful opportunity
to invite deaf Catholics to join the
celebration.
We
are
trying
to
encourage greater pastoral support
for Catholics who are deaf.
It would be good to recruit a team of
volunteers to help promote this in the
Diocese. Please contact Fr Peter Hollins
(PCS Chaplain). Tel: 01730 262290

diary for the period Sept 2015 to July

COLLECTION FOR ANSEL D’MELLO
There will be a second collection after all
Masses this weekend to mark the
departure of Ansel and to show our
appreciation for his ministry here with us.
He returns to his seminary on 16 June. We
will have a farewell reception for him after
the 1000 Mass on Sunday 14 June.
ORDINATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD
The Bishop will be ordaining two men to
the diocesan priesthood this summer: John
Paul Lyttle will be ordained here at 1800
on Friday 3 July and Philip Carroll (who
many of you may remember did a
pastoral placement with us a few years
ago) will be ordained at the Cathedral for
the Bishop of the Armed Forces in
Aldershot at 1130 on Saturday 25 July.
From September Fr Lyttle will join the
clergy team at the Cathedral as an
assistant priest.
THE GUILD OF ST MARTHA
Ushers and Welcomers play an important
role in Sunday Mass. They welcome, hand
out newsletters and hymn books, and
assist where needed. Those already doing
so are invited to come together as a
group to form the Guild of St Martha – she
whom Jesus noted was busy providing
hospitality. Those who’d like to start this
ministry are also invited to join this new
Guild. It will meet once a month on the
third Saturday of each month starting
20 June from 1100 – 1200 noon in the
Jubilee Room for prayer and formation.
For information speak to Sister Maura.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Next Sunday fifty-five children from our
parish
will
make
their
First
Holy
Communion. They will do so in groups at
each
of
our
Sunday
Masses
accompanied no doubt by their families
from hear and far. The children and their
families will be sitting in reserved seats –
which means some of you won’t be able
to sit in your usual place! Please pray for
the children as they count down the days
to what is for every Catholic a very special
day.
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
Loss and grief are part of the human
condition. At some stage in our lives, some
of us will have experienced loss in one
form or another. The loss of a loved one
through death, loss of relationships
through separation or divorce, loss of
jobs/careers … Bereavement is part of the
process of grief, sometimes pain can be
unbearable if journeying alone. Reaching
out to someone in grief requires a
compassionate heart and attentive
listening skills. This is a rewarding ministry in
both understanding one’s vulnerability
and the humility of being present in
another’s sacred space and being
welcomed into their sacred stories. St
John’s Parish is seeking new members to
join the present ‘Bethany Group’.
We meet on the first Saturday of the
month starting 5 Sept from 1100-1200 in St
John’s Room in the Discovery Centre.
Contact Sister Maura for more information.
