C ATHOLIC P ORTSMOUTH
Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth
12 JULY 2015 - FIFTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
Prophets, Freedom and Sharing
Last week, we were reminded in this newsletter that “We are anointed prophets in baptism” and
“we are empowered ....(to) be the Body of Christ, bringing Christʼs risen Presence to our broken
world”. Todayʼs readings continue this theme for they are essentially about evangelisation. In the first
reading Amos has a hard time and exclaims that it was not his idea to become a prophet! We too
could face r e j e c t i o n if we tried to put people right about their behaviour. You may think, ʻbut how
can I evangelise?ʼ The answer must be - by copying Jesus. He was free to be himself and was more
than human. And as a human he let himself be so close to God that he became the truth of his very
being.
We could start by asking ourselves if we are trapped by any ʻuncleanʼ spirits. Few of us have
encountered anyone who is possessed (although there are such cases). But various things such as
tobacco, alcohol, gambling or consumerism can enslave us. Evil is incredibly subtle and apparently
reasonable: “Have a drink and relax!” “Youʼll feel better if you have this....” Before long we too can
be trapped. To be able to evangelise we must be free and this is why Jesus told his disciples in the
gospel to leave everything. If we are free, people immediately notice how we are and may wonder
why we are different. Believing in God, in Jesus, should make a difference to us because, as Pope
Francis says, “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus” He also
speaks of us “being Godʼs leaven in the midst of humanity” and that “The Church must be a place
of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live
the good life of the Gospel.” Does this not remind you of the parable of the mustard seed?
In the second reading St Paul shares his experience of knowing Jesus, and we all know the effect that
had on his life! He does this beautifully at the beginning of his letter to the Ephesians. It is worth reading
and savouring again and again. Remember the people who introduced you to God, who helped
you to know and love Jesus and thank God for them. Most Christian parents want their children to be
baptised - why? Because their faith is precious to them and they want to s h a r e it through love.
