Lesson Overview: In this lesson, students will learn vocabulary so that they will be
able to identify household items, appliances, and kitchenware.

Materials Needed: Whiteboard and/or flip chart, erasable markers, handouts, flash
cards, counting chips, and prizes.
Equipment Needed: none
Activities:
1. Have the new vocabulary words written on the board when the students arrive
for class.
2. Explain the purpose of the lesson.
3. Introduce new vocabulary.
a. Pronounce the new vocabulary words one at a time and have the
students repeat the words in unison.
b. Pronounce the new vocabulary words one at a time and ask individual
students to repeat the word. Repeat until the students can pronounce
the words well.
4. Introduce the meanings of the vocabulary words by giving students a copy of
Identify Household Items, Appliances, and Kitchenware Vocabulary and
carefully reviewing the meaning of each word. Orally work on pronunciation and
understanding of each vocabulary word.

5. For further vocabulary practice and development, use Identify Household
Items, Appliances, and Kitchenware Sentence Matching. Have the students
work on this activity individually. Review the answers orally as a group.
6. For further vocabulary development, give students Household Appliances
Word Search. This sheet asks students to label the pictures underneath the
puzzle and then locate them. A Household Appliances Word Search Answer
Key to the puzzle is also provided.
Assessment/Evaluation of Learning:
1. Teacher observation of students’ participation.
2. Evaluation of student worksheets.
Optional/Follow-up Activities:
1. Use Identify Household Items, Appliances, and Kitchenware Vocabulary
Flash Cards for further vocabulary development. Students may make their own
cards using 3” X 5” index cards.
2. Teach the following words using the Identify Household Items, Appliances,
and Kitchenware Optional Vocabulary. Make sure students understand the
meanings of the vocabulary words and that the students can correctly
pronounce the words.
3. Play Household Items, Appliances, and Kitchenware Bingo. 16 Bingo cards
have been provided. You can choose to print all 16 at once or print 4 at a time.
Print them onto index stock paper and laminate them if you wish. Provide
counting chips to the students to cover the board. Explain to the students how
to play Bingo. Be sure to bring small prizes to award to the winners.
4. The Oxford Picture Dictionary, by Oxford University Press, “A Kitchen”, page 40.
This describes a simple kitchen plan to the students and uses various activities
for vocabulary development.
5. Ask the students what kitchen items they use most often.

6. Explain some safety precautions to take while in the kitchen. For example,
using potholders to remove food from the oven, keep combustibles away from
the stove while it is in use, or using aprons when cooking to prevent their
clothing from being damaged.
