1. Find three consecutive even integers whose sum is 16 more than two times the middle integer.
2. The length of a rectangle is one centimeter less than 4 times the width. If the perimeter of the
rectangle is 78 cm, find the length and width.
3. Ellen made a trip of 355 miles by bus and train. She traveled 3 hours by bus and 4 hours by
train. If the train averaged 10 mph faster than the bus, find the rate of each.
4. Flying with a tail wind, an airplane can fly 3625 in 6.25 h. Flying at the same air speed,
however, it takes the airplane one hour longer to make the return flight against the wind. Find
the wind speed.
5. A collection of quarters and dimes contains 44 coins and has a total of $6.50. How many
coins of each kind are there in the collection?
6. Flying with the wind, an airplane can travel 1500 km in 2.5 hr, but flying against the wind,
the airplane requires 0.5 hours more to make the return trip. Find the wind speed.
7. How much pure acetic acid must be added to 180 g of a solution that is 35% acetic acid to
produce a solution that is 50% acetic acid?
8. Tickets to the Little Theatre were $3 each for balcony seats and $5 each for orchestra seats.
For a certain performance, there were 60 more orchestra tickets sold than balcony tickets. The
