QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
In response to questions from Bidders to clarify specifications:
Items 1-3 and 7-11
(1) As to their concern with item one: The brewster cut faces are equivalent to an AR coating in my
opinion and would be completely acceptable as long as the cut angle is chosen for the specified
operating wavelength of 459 nm. As an additional note, brewster cut faces would be acceptable on
any part as long as the angle matches the specified wavelength for the part
Items 4 and 5
(2) As to their concern for items 4 and 5; We would accept 70% peak diffraction efficiency, but would
prefer higher efficiencies if possible and will evaluate the bids accordingly.

ATTACHMENT B: SPECIFICATIONS
SCOPE
The University of Wisconsin – Madison, Department of Physics is purchasing Acousto-Optic Modulators and
Acousto-Optic Deflectors.
SPECIFICATIONS & INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING SPECIFICATION TABLE
The following specifications represent minimum acceptable requirement. Bidders must select either “yes” or “no”
for each specification below. For any “No” Response, the bidder must provide a detailed written explanation
indicating how this difference in specification would affect the performance of the product being bid. The University
shall be the sole judge of acceptability.
General Specifications:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Five (5) Acousto-Optic Modulators (AOM) with a rise time of 15 ns or less. Must have antireflection coatings or brewster cut faces for 459 nm. Must be able to handle a beam with
100 mW at 459nm. (Note some AOM crystals have sensitivity to blue/green light and
therefore have a lower optical power handling ability for these wavelengths.)
Two (2) AOM’s with a rise time of 30 ns or less. Must have anti-reflection coatings or
brewster cut faces for 1038nm light. Must be able to handle a ~10W beam.
One (1) Acousto-Optic Deflector (AOD) with 170 MHz center frequency and a 60 MHz RF
bandwidth. Must have an anti-reflection coating or brewster cut faces for 459nm. Must
have an access/rise time of less than 1 microsecond and the ability to handle a 100 mW
459 beam. We need the intensity variation over this RF bandwidth to be less than 2 dB with
a peak diffraction efficiency of over 75%. The number of resolved spots is not important.
One (1) AOD with 30 MHz of RF bandwidth for use at 918nm. Must have an access/rise
time of <1 us handling ~50 mW of 918nm power. We need the intensity variation over this
RF bandwidth to be less than 2 dB with a peak diffraction efficiency of over 80%. 70%.
One (1) AOD with 30 MHz of RF bandwidth for use at 1038nm. Must have an access/rise
time of <1 us handling ~30 mW of 1038nm power. We need the intensity variation over this
RF bandwidth to be less than 2 dB with a peak diffraction efficiency of over 80% 70%.
One (1) AOD with 500 MHz of RF bandwidth for use at 459nm. Must have an access/rise
time of less than 100 ns. The number of resolved spots is not important as this device will
just be used as a variable frequency shifter. We would like a peak diffraction efficiency of
over 50% if possible. The intensity variation over this RF bandwidth may be up to 3 dB.
NOTE: Items 7-11 are pairs of Acousto-Optic Deflectors (AOD) for our atom addressing
systems and all have the following requirements:
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
a) 50 resolved spots when using the criterion that a spot is resolved when its peak intensity
occurs at the location of the first zero of its neighbors.
b) An access/rise time of less than .5 microseconds.
c) An intensity variation of less than 2 dB over these 50 spots.
d) A peak diffraction efficiency of greater than 70%
Two (2) AOD’s with above specs with an anti-reflection or brewster cut faces coating at
459nm.
Two (2) AOD’s with above specs with an anti-reflection or brewster cut faces coating at
685nm.
Two (2) AOD’s with above specs with an anti-reflection or brewster cut faces coating at
852nm.
Two (2) AOD’s with above specs with an anti-reflection or brewster cut faces coating at
915nm.
Two (2) AOD’s with above specs with an anti-reflection or brewster cut faces coating at
1038nm.
