Vocabulary Terms
1. outback – the dry interior of the continent of Australia
2. monolith – the portion you can see of a single large rock sticking out of earth.
3. Aborigines – the indigenous or native people of Australia; “the people who were here from the beginning”
4. bush – the remote countryside of Australia
5. Great Barrier Reef – The world’s largest coral reef; located a short distance off the northeast coast of the state of
Queensland, Australia.
6. Coral Sea – Actually part of the Pacific Ocean; is located northeast of the Great Barrier Reef.
7. Great Dividing Range – largest mountain range in Australia; located along the eastern coast of the continent.
8. Ayers Rock – The large monolith located almost exactly in the center of Australia; a sacred site to the native people,
the Anangu, who call it Uluru (its official name)
9. Great Victoria Desert – the large dry desert in the south/southwestern portion of Australia.
10. Commonwealth of Nations – weak association of member countries once part of the British Empire; also called the
British Commonwealth.
