JOB TITLE:
Head of Production (STAGE)
JOB PURPOSE:
To manage the Rep main stage and all staff and
technical aspects of the Rep’s work that relates to the
mounting of
Rep and Rep Creative Learning
productions and all work presented by visiting
companies. To ensure excellent communication
between the Production team and the rest of the
organisation.

Sound, stage staff and casuals
KEY INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Head of Production (REP), Senior Management Team (consisting of CEO/Artistic
Director/s, Finance and Administration Manager, Head of Finance, Head/s of
Creative Learning, Head of Operations, Head of Marketing and Business
Development, Administrator, SDT Artistic Director, SDT General Executive
Producer/s), other members of the production team and Ensemble, Rep Creative
Learning team, Visitor Services Manager, SDT Technical Manager and SDT Stage
Manager
KEY EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Colleagues in other theatres, suppliers and casual staff.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Head of Production(Stage) will represent the production department at Senior
Management Team alongside the Head of Production(Rep) and will liaise with the
HofP(Rep) to ensure information to and from SMT is distributed and acted upon
throughout the production department
S/he will work alongside the Head of Production(Rep) to lead and inspire the Dundee
Rep production department.
S/he will lead on the technical realization of all aspects of Dundee Rep’s productions
as well as ensuring the efficient and safe performance of the programme of incoming
work.
S/he will ensure that health and safety standards are constantly maintained and
improved upon, with responsibility for all Health and Safety duties on all stages, in all
workshops, in all stores, in all control booths, in all fly towers, and in all rehearsal
spaces.
In addition s/he will contribute to the development of the theatre more generally,
focusing on the implementation of the Rep’s Strategic and Business Plans, by

delivering, developing and maximizing the impact of the range of activities and
initiatives the plan seeks to generate.
The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of the Rep main
stage, the servicing of visiting companies, stage production staff and any freelance
staff that are required to fulfill the range of tasks.
S/he will assist the HofP(Rep) on matters relating to the organisation’s Disability and
Equality working group and will assist with the development of the production
departments section of the organisations Disability Equality Scheme and Action Plan
Empowering staff responsible to the HofP(Stage) by delegating to them responsibility
for the implementation of their work plans, the delivery of their department’s services
and the day-to-day operation of the department
KEY DUTIES:
1. Forward planning, scheduling and preparation of production weeks, technical
rehearsals on stage, visiting company requirements including get- ins and outs
and Creative Learning stage use
2. Alongside the HofP(Rep) ensure that the technical departments operate and
liaise harmoniously and efficiently, ensuring excellent communication between
the production team and the rest of the organisation including the facilitation and
of regular production Heads of Department and full production department
meetings.
3. Liaising with incoming companies on all technical aspects of shows/events
including staffing and scheduling of get-ins and ensuring that all visiting
companies production and technical requirements including recharges are met as
agreed in contracts and riders
4. Employment and line management of stage staff and other technical staff. This
includes working alongside the HofP(Rep) to ensure efficient scheduling,
authorizing and controlling of staff time and overtime within agreed budgets and
providing weekly summarised timesheets of all production hours and their
allocation to Rep/visiting shows (ensuring the terms and conditions of relevant
Union Agreements are followed)
5. Alongside the HofP(Rep) ensure annual appraisals and professional development
needs of staff are addressed
6. To contribute to the Rep’s Senior Management Team and help influence the
strategic direction and operational plans of the theatre including advising on and
contributing to the Rep’s plans for training and skills development in the aspects
of technical theatre training
7. To be responsible for all Health and Safety duties on all stages, workshop, stores,
control booths, fly towers and rehearsal spaces, ensuring all H&S policies are
complied with, updated and recorded.
8. Alongside the Head of Operations s/he will ensure that the recording, monitoring
and safe keeping of building wide H&S information is maintained and is available
for inspection when ever required. S/he will also ensure that they are kept

informed of revised legislation, especially industry specific H&S matters referring
these to the organisations H&S committee and SMT
9. Ensure that Health and Safety training including First Aid is scheduled and in
consultation with the Head of Operations that adequate First Aid cover is
available at all times
10. Keeping an accurate record of technical and stage equipment and consumable
stock including its cost value. Ensuring stage equipment is properly maintained
and advising on and the replacement of equipment
11. Overseeing and planning stage maintenance periods and assisting with building
wide maintenance requirements
12. Ensuring the safe storage of ensemble productions and keeping the theatres
offsite store in good order at all times
13. Maintaining the theatre’s van and organising other transport when required
14. Being a key holder
This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive and the employee may be required to
perform duties outside of this as operationally required and at the discretion of the
Chief Executive/Artistic Director/s
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES
1. At least five years experience in Technical Stage Management in a medium/large
scale producing theatre
2. Leadership skills
3. Staff management experience
4. Strong administrative and organisational skills
5. Knowledge and experience of current Health and Safety issues and legislation
6. Experience of Scheduling
7. PC literate (including Word, Excel and CAD)
8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
9. Self motivated and pro-active approach
10. Strong team player with the ability to manage and motivate a team
11. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours
DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES
1. Experience of working at manager level within a theatre context
2. A passionate interest in contemporary culture, particularly theatre
3. An interest in training and skills development for emerging theatre practitioners
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
 Hours worked will be 39 hours/week. Overtime is not paid, though Time off in
Lieu can be taken. Regular hours will include evening and weekend work and the
nature of the work and responsibilities might necessitate longer hours.
 This is a permanent post.

There is a probationary period of six months during which time the notice period
is one month, thereafter the notice period is three months.
Holiday entitlement is 20 days per year (April to March) plus statutory days rising
to 25 days per year following completion of five years service.
There is an Employer contribution pension scheme
All staff are required to uphold the Theatre’s policies, which are outlined in the
Induction Pack
£28,000 per annum
