Lesson Plan Class: TSD; Wed. 9th November 2009; 14-16 p.m. Topic: Prepositions of place Global aims: The pupils get to know prepositions of place and are able to formulate their function and meaning. Specific aims: a) The pupils get to know the prepositions of place by following the hints during the Treasure Hunt. b) The pupils are able to name the prepositions of place and their meaning by decoding the hints during the Treasure Hunt. c) The pupils use their knowledge of prepositions of place by conducting the photo-rally. d) The use of pupil-pupil interaction during the group work phase increases the pupils’ communicative and social competence. Time Phase Introduction Content - Greeting - Introductory story in which the first hint is given to the pupils - Prepositions treasure hunt Consolidation 1 - Hints are written down at the board after they are found - The function of prepositions is being clarified by the one left out. -Photo-rally -“Position your group members anywhere in this room and take one or two photos of each group member! Try to show the meaning of the prepositions in, into, on, under, at, between, opposite, behind, on top of, next to! Be creative!” - This task is distributed as a handout Didactic commentary Pupils find out about prepositions of place in a playful way and are able to easily decode the meaning of previously unknown prepositions by seeing them in the classroom. Communication and social interaction are necessary for solving this task. Form of interaction Teacher directed teaching / group work Media Blackboard Group work Digital camera, handout Practice - “Now you will see the results of your work! Please form three sentences each, which include the prepositions we have used today.” Pupils put their knowledge of prepositions of place into use. Individual work Notebook, projector Ambiguity is disbanded in order to enable the pupils to complete their homework assignment. Teacher-pupil interaction Handout - Task is handed out in a written version - The pictures are shown to the class - Pupils formulate sentences based on the pictures previously taken Consolidation 2 -The pupils’ sentences are read to the class and, if necessary, corrected by plenary and teacher - Teacher hands out a sheet on which the meaning of the prepositions is shown figuratively Homework assignment: “Please write three sentences in which you use the prepositions learned today. Describe the position of things in your room/house.”
