Duxbury Community Partnerships for Children Council
93 Chandler Street, Duxbury, MA 02332
(781) 582-9518
The mission of the Duxbury Community Partnerships for Children Council is to
develop collaborative relationships that improve early childhood education in
the community. The Council will respond to the needs of the young children,
their families, and early childhood providers in Duxbury on an ongoing basis.
The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care has recognized
the importance of high quality programming for young children by creating the
Community Partnerships for Children (CPC) grant. The CPC program is designed
to build a collaborative system of early childhood programs and comprehensive
services within Duxbury.
To help achieve these goals, the Duxbury CPC has allocated grant funds to
increase the availability, affordability and quality of early care and education
programs for preschoolers in our community through child care scholarships. It
is the Council’s hope that all young children have an opportunity to participate in
a high quality early childhood program that meets their needs.

LICENSED CHILD CARE CENTERS
Questions regarding licensing procedures for preschool programs, and family
childcare may be directed to:
Department of Early Education and Care
WWW.EEC.STATE.MA.US
Who can help me find the right care for my child?
Your local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency. Their parent counselors
will help you find out what's available in your area, and give you information on
costs, financial assistance, names to contact, and what to look for when visiting
programs.
Is it important to look for licensed child care?
Yes. An EEC license shows the provider meets Massachusetts’s rules for health,
safety and education. It will be posted where you can see it. A
license is an extremely important credential.
How can I judge the quality of the child care?
Visit the program. Look for the license. Trust your instincts. And always ask
questions. It pays to take the steps to ensure your child is safe and happy.
What's the best way to make my choice?
Visit programs and compare. Go in the morning when children are most active.
If the provider is very busy, but you like what you see, go back when there is
time to talk.
When should I start looking?
The sooner, the better, especially if you have young children. Many good
facilities fill up quickly, so give yourself lots of time to visit and
compare.
What are the types of licensed child care?
There are three types of licensed providers for which EEC sets rules for
health, safety and staffing. A licensed provider should also help children
learn and grow, and promote a good relationship between parent and child. The
current license will be posted.
*
Group Child Care: This license is for all center-based care for infants,
toddlers, or preschoolers. Part-time centers include nursery schools and
private kindergartens. Head Start programs are free, part-time care
for children ages 3 to 5, and open to low-income families or children
with disabilities.
*
School Age Child Care: These are sometimes called extended day or
after school programs, and are open before and/or after school and/or
during school vacations.
*
Family Child Care: Care is given in a provider's home for up to six
children including the provider's own children.
*
Large Family Child Care: This type of family child care allows for up to
10 children in the home with the assistance of an approved assistant.
*
Family Child Care Plus: Another type of Family Child Care which allows,
with proven child care experience, 6 children plus two school age
children.
What about providers who are not licensed? What are they like?
There are providers who are not required to carry a license from EEC, and as a
result may or may not meet our set of standards:
*
*
*
In-home care provided by an adult in the child's own home.
Relative care provided by a relative of the child in the relative's home.
Public school run preschools or after school programs, or programs run
by private elementary schools.
What should I consider when observing and talking to the people at a child
care program?
When you visit, watch how caregivers interact with your child and other
children. They are an important part of your child's care. There should be
enough adults to work with a group and to care for individual children. Child
Caregivers should:
*
Be nurturing
*
Understand how children learn and grow
*
Have experience and education in working with young children
*
Encourage you to visit and get involved
*
Design programs to promote the healthy development of each child
What should I look for in a child care facility?
Make sure you are comfortable with the look of the facility and the program. It
should offer:

Clean, safe, inviting spaces

Indoor and outdoor play areas

Nutritious and appealing snacks and meals
How can I tell if a program will benefit my young child?
A program should:
*
Offer a variety of educational, fun activities, appropriate to the age of
the children
*
Have plenty of safe toys and learning materials
*
Encourage creative play
*
Allow children time to play alone and with others
*
Plan both quiet time and active play, indoors and outdoors
After I choose a child care program, what else should I keep in mind?
Keep on caring. Stay involved. Visit often and talk with the caregivers. Meet all
the people who work and play with your child. Tell them about
changes at home that may affect your child's behavior. Ask about your child's
progress. Get involved in the program, and the parents' group for
that program. If there isn't one, talk with other parents about starting one.
Any time you see a condition or activity you don't like, tell your
provider right away.

staffed by early childhood professionals who follow the quality
programming criteria of the National Association for the Education of
Young Children. The Magic Dragon is accredited by the National Academy of
Early Childhood programs.
Children are grouped chronologically but the curriculum recognizes
individual developmental needs. Activities are designed to provide whole
body learning experiences. These experiences address cognitive growth,
physical growth, and emotional well being. We believe that school/home
collaboration is essential to a child’s development. There is an active
advisory board comprised of parents and friends of the center.
Each classroom is staffed by a team of at least three professionals.
There are whole group activities, small group activities, and an
opportunity to be alone in a cozy corner of the classroom. Creative
experiences are provided through art, music and imaginary play.
Meaningful science and math occur daily with nature observation, cooking,
block building, water and sand play. Our children develop a knowledge
base while developing confidence in their abilities to succeed in and
manage the school environment.

the Duxbury Public Schools' early childhood curriculum to ensure that your
child will be prepared as he or she enters into Kindergarten.

Discovery Corner Preschool is a unique preschool run out of my home. I take a
developmental approach in teaching young children. At Discovery Corner
children are taught to think, solve problems, share ideas and cooperate on their
own level. It is my belief that all children learn differently, so it is important
to offer a lot of individual attention. My program is small, so each child’s
individual needs will be met and challenged appropriately.
At Discovery Corner Preschool children blossom intellectually, socially,
creatively and physically through my positive, developmental approach. Parents
are welcome to participate in our classroom activities on a monthly basis. Open
communication with families is an essential part of my program.

The Conservatory's arts-principled, child-centered preschool program is
designed to build sound socialization skills, positive self-esteem, and
independent thinking by using the arts as an educational tool. These
concepts are taught through regular exposure to music and arts based
activities based on established philosophies of early childhood education;
music, drama and speech play, visual art projects, creative movement, and
physical education activities. Through their play, children come to see
themselves as explorers, discoverers, problem solvers, and inventors.
Preschool I (Threes and young Fours) - Two mornings plus
This younger group focuses on developing socialization skills such as
appropriate behaviors, problem-solving skills, and dealing with peers and
adults. While the student/teacher relationship develops, the parent/child
separation becomes increasingly positive. This exposure results in an
expanded attention span, empowerment when making choices, and a willingness
to face new challenges. Age-appropriate learning centers allow for choice
and self-directed play, while small groups and supportive teaching help
children prepare a base for academic excellence. New this year, parents are
encouraged to "build" their child's school schedule based on the hours
below. Each component has a separate fee:

Preschool II/Pre-Kindergarten Group (Fours and Fives) - Three mornings plus
As with Preschool I, the nucleus of this program is well-planned learning
centers allowing for choice and self-directed play, while small groups, and
supportive teaching preparing children for academic excellence. The
continued growth of language skills, mathematical reasoning, and scientific
thought is emphasized throughout all the learning centers. Changes to the
learning environment, activities, and projects reflect emerging interests
and individual goals.
Children follow a basic schedule including a large group setting at the
beginning and end of the day. The large group is broken into two smaller
groups (Preschool II and Pre-K) in the middle of the day for more focused
activity time. The program is designed for each child to learn all the
necessary skills and understandings to succeed in kindergarten and continue
to thrive academically and socially. New this year, parents are encouraged
