You do not have to open these files. Look at the instructions in chapter 2 on using a bare-bone
environment.

I have had a few students send me mail saying they had difficulty
following the instructions in chapter 2 on how to compile their program
and use ObjectEditor. I have updated the chapter to make the steps more
explicit. For those of you who have already printed it, I am attacihing
the portion I changed. If you still have problems, please be specific
about which step in the instructions failed, and I will send a
clarification to everyone.

You can mail to help14, you do not have to mail to a specific TA.
The TAs will tell you to read the instructions.
Why are you trying to open the software? Nowhere in the instructions are
you asked to do so.
Saying:
I really do not understand how to set the path.
is too general. You have to be specific about what you cannot understand.
Are you getting mail send to comp14? There is a new set of instructions I
mailed to everyone.

Troubleshooting jvc and jview commands

If the command:
jvc <Class File>
does not succeed, execute the command without the file name:
jvc
If this command succeeds, and the previous one did not, then check that
you have entered the file name correctly and are in the directory in
which the file was created. If this command also does not succeed, then
look at the autoexec file to check that you entered the line to set the
path correctly . In particular, check that the directory in which J++
was installed is consistent with the one specified in the line. You can
do so by checking that the J++ directory, Microsoft Visual Studio, is in
the default directory, C:\Program Files. If it is in a different
directory, enter its name instead of the default directory, C:\Program
Files in the autoexec file. Also check that the file Jvc.exe exists in
the VJ98 directory within Microsoft Visual Studio. If the autoexec file
is correct and Jvc.exe exists, then you probably did not reboot the
computer after changing the autoexec file.
If the command:
jview bus.uigen.ObjectEditor
does not work, execute jview without the name of the ObjectEditor:
jview
If this command does not work, check that you entered %PATH% in the
autoexec entry for setting the path. If this command works, but the
previous one did not, check that you entered the name of ObjectEditor
(bus.uigen.ObjectEditor) correctly. If you did, check the autoexec entry
to set the class path. In particular, check that all three jar files are
specified correctly in the entry – that is their names and the name of
the directory in which they have been downloaded are given correctly.
Also check that the sizes of the files are exactly the same as the ones
given in the web page from which you downloaded the files. You can find
the size of a file by selecting the file name in an explorer window,
right clicking to bring up the Properties menu, and selecting the
General properties.

You seem to be seeing the approximated numbers with the definition of KB as 1024
bytes rather than 1000. Check the file size by right clicking on the file name
in an explorer window, selecting Properties, and then selecting at the General
properties. The files should be copied correctly by IE.

The programs must be tested on on some test data. In general, you (the TAs)
need to come up with a grading sheet in which you specify what data you will test, the
LAs will check tthat the test data works and give the scores to you, and then you
will look at the source code for variale names etc. In this assignment, you can
ignore style but in later ones you will take points off, so if the program works,
they get full points - but do point out the style problems.
I have not heard from most of the LAs and many of the TAs. I assume yiou are all
settling in. I need to hear from all you TAs about office hours by Monday, and
you need to decide about grading sheet by then. Also, until the LAs get settled in,
you may also have to do the correctness grading. Ask the students in your
recitation to give you labelled disks before thursday (ideally they should bring
them to your office hours, but they could put them in your mailbox)h and you can
execute their code in front of them (preferably) or later.

which ie the same as:
cent*9/5 + 32
It is not ObjectEditor but Java that does the rounding up. You will
understand this better when we study expressions.

For anyone having problems with downloading the files, go to the office hours
of one of us (or a class mate who who has downloaded them) with a zip disk
and we will download the files to it. Unfortunately, the ATN machines do not
have zip disks.
If you are having computer problems in genetral, you will have to use the ATN
machines. We are trying our best to help you set the software on your
computers, but there can be computer-specific problems we cannot solve given
the time constraints. If you use the Venable labs, you have the added benefit
that LAs will be manning them as soon as they get settled into the semester.

Did you use the 14 MS-DOS Prompt or the regular MS-DOS prompt. I suspect the
latter - you must have run "command" directly. Read the assignment on how to
access the fotrmer. If you ran the former, please let me know in which lab
this happened and we will check it.

I suspect you entered the set command directly in the MS-DOS window as

Assuming you can download Java (1.1) from the sun site, the instructions in
chapter 2 do talk a bit about how to use Unix systems. I would not
recommend it, because the J++ editor is really nice.

Yes double is more precise, but integer provides rounding off.. So use

In which directory did you download the files? You can use the find command to
figure that out. Make sure it is consistent with what you put in the auoexec
file.
I have updated the notes - the instructions may be more clear to you now.
I dont think you are going to be able to find help this late on a firday evening.

This means the object file does not exist. You may have forgotten to execute
the jvc command. Before executing the jview command, execute the command:
dir ATemperatureConverter.class
The command will probaly say file not found. Execute dir to see what files
you do have in that directory.

That should not happen. If you have a laptop, come by during office hours and we
can try
to fix this problem. In the meantime, cd to the directory in which jvc is and
work from
there, creating your assignment in that directory.

Hi, you need all the .jar files to set-up the CLASSPATH environment. say,
you download these three files in some certain directory, and execute this
line
SET
CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;.;?:\???\oe.jar;?:\???\shapes.jar;?:\???\Java\lib\
swingall.jar
?:\??? stands for the certain directory you put these 3 files in. For more
details, see prof.Prasun's slide 2, page 19.
You can also add this line to your autoexec.bat file(which is under the
root directory of your c drive). Then you don't need to execute this line
every time you start your computer.

yes, it's a bad command because actually this line contains two commands,
c:\autoexec.bat
notepad c:\autoexec.bat (notepad is a command, and c:\autoexec.bat is the
file to be edited by it)
one command in one line please, this is the way in DOS. and i guess you
need to use "notepad" to edit the c:\autoexec.bat first before you execute
it.

hi Scott,
notepad is a single command, so you need to use it like
notepad c:\autoexec.bat
instead of notepadc:\auteoxec.bat
so
notepad is the command and c:\autoexec.bat is the file you want to edit
with notepad, good luck.
