Guidelines for Green Games Coordinators: Residential Green Games is an environmental competition that seeks to promote sustainable education in the fifteen campus housing communities. With almost 4,500 students living in the dorms, Green Games has immense potential to instill sustainable behavioral change via competition. A close relationship between GG coordinators and the UNC Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling is essential for success. To make participation easier, we’ve compiled some guidelines to lead your community to a Green Games victory! Suggestions include: Serve as the liaison between OWRR and your residential community Work collaboratively with RA staff, LLC, RHA, and others to plan and encourage sustainability-themed programs using the ideas from the GG website (and your own creative genius) Encourage RA staff to create sustainability-themed bulletin boards, take pictures of them, and e-mail them to greengames@unc.edu Collect and submit program forms from your staff, LLC, and RHA and attach the attendance sheet using the online survey form Attend monthly GG meetings with OWRR staff Communicate effectively with residents about the importance of Green Games via social media, bulletin boards, door tags, etc. Update community and RA staff with competition standings through bulletin boards, email newsletters, and announcements during staff meetings Receive green events certification from the UNC Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling Have fun and be creative! The OWRR and your residential leadership support you. Sustainability-themed programming can relate to: Recycling , waste reduction, public transportation, energy, agriculture, water, compost, climate change, sustainability at UNC, and/or green architecture Timeline for Green Games Coordinators: This timeline is a simple, easy-to-use checklist that, if followed, will give your community a good shot at winning the 2011-2012 Green Games Competition! August 1. Receive Green Events certification from the UNC Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. 2. Plan and hold your first GG event. September 3. Meet with the GG team from your community and discuss potential for collaboration. 4. Attend the first monthly GG meeting. October 5. Creatively publicize your community’s standings in the competition. 6. Update community government, your CD, and the RA staff on your progress in the competition. November 7. Expect an email from the OWRR requesting an update on your team’s progress. -Winter Break January 8. Remind RAs of the importance of Green Games by announcing GG standings at midyear training and brainstorming more competition ideas within the team. February 9. Creatively publicize your community’s standing relative to others in the competition. March 10. Make the final push! GG ends the last week of March. April 11. Attend the GG awards ceremony with your GG team, CD, and any other residents who were essential to the year’s success. 12. Earn recognition for your work in Green Games at the end-of-year RA Banquet.
