The post will involve clinical input with in-patients in Midpark Hospital, Dumfries and involvement and support of the community learning disability team which covers the east and west of the region. In addition, the postholder will support the activities of the consultant psychiatrist in learning disability and will carry out hospital based and community assessment of individuals with learning disability who require psychiatric assessment. The forensic role will primarily include providing clinical input to the 14 bedded in-patient rehabilitation unit which includes an enhanced rehabilitation function for forensic patients. The postholder will support the learning disability consultant and the forensic consultant in this role. It would be an advantage that the individual has evidence of formal training in psychiatry and a wide experience of psychiatry including learning disability and forensic psychiatry experience. It would be expected that the successful candidate would be able to demonstrate at least three years experience which would be relevant to this post. It would be preferable if the candidate holds a recognised postgraduate qualification in psychiatry and also it would be preferable if the candidate is eligible to be trained as an approved medical practitioner or hold this qualification currently. MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES Psychiatric services to patients with a learning disability in Dumfries & Galloway are provided on a region wide basis. There are approximately 800 people on the learning disability register but only a percentage of these individuals have active casework that could involve psychiatric services. There is a long established multi disciplinary community learning disability team and the postholder would work with the team offering psychiatric assessments when required under the direction of the consultant psychiatrist. In addition, in-patient beds are available within the new Midpark Hospital, Dumfries. postholder will have duties towards these in-patients. The The work therefore of the postholder will be shared between out-patient and community work and in-patient work. The forensic role will primarily include providing clinical input to the 14 bedded in-patient rehabilitation unit which includes an enhanced rehabilitation function for forensic patients. The postholder will support the learning disability consultant and the forensic consultant in this role. 3 DUTIES OF THE POST To provide medical input into the community assessment of patients with a learning disability and in particular the psychiatric assessment of such patients to assist the community learning disability team. It would be expected that the majority of the assessments would be multi-disciplinary and the postholder would be supervised in this by the consultant psychiatrist. The postholder will provide psychiatric and medical input to the learning disability in-patients in Midpark Hospital, Dumfries. This will involve attendance at the weekly ward rounds currently held on a Tuesday morning. This may also involve attendance at appropriate Tribunals regarding patients held under the Mental Health Act. The postholder will provide psychiatric and medical input to in-patients in Dalveen Rehabilitation Unit, in conjunction with the trainee psychiatrist. This will include attendance at the forensic/rehabilitation team meetings on Monday mornings and organised reviews. Occasional Mental Health Tribunal attendance may be required. The postholder would be required to undertake training in the supervision of ECT services currently provided at the Day Surgery Unit, Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary. Cover of supervision of psychiatric trainees in ECT would be required on an occasional basis when the ECT Supervisor is not available. ADMIN SUPPORT The postholder will have access to such medical secretarial support as is required for the post. There are currently 3 medical secretaries (1 full time and 2 part time) who support the learning disability team.
