Kirkwood, MO 63122 (314) 822-5823 Fax (314) 822-5898 CITY OF KIRKWOOD PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS EXCAVATIONS IN PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY June 2010 Contractors performing excavations in public right-of-way shall perform such work in accordance with Chapter 20 of the Kirkwood Code of Ordinances. 1. All backfilled material shall be immediately removed from the site. 2. After approval of the work, the excavation shall be filled with 2” minus crushed stone or 2” clean stone compacted in 6” lifts or flowable fill. 3. Asphaltic concrete pavement, macadam pavement, or bituminous pavement shall be full depth saw cut for a straight, square edge, 2’ larger on all sides of the excavation. A 7” thick Portland cement concrete base, with Meramec sand and “C” gravel, shall be primed and capped with a 2” thick asphaltic concrete wearing surface. 4. Concrete pavement shall be replaced with Portland cement concrete, with Meramec sand and “C” gravel, to a joint or saw cut edge 2’ larger than the excavation on all sides. 5. Any pavement markings disturbed by the excavations shall be replaced to City standards. If the applicant fails to replace the markings, the City will perform the work and deduct the cost (minimum $100) from the deposit. 6. Parkways outside of the paved area shall be backfilled with compacted earth, fine graded, and returned to original condition by sodding. Sod shall be watered and maintained by contractor. 7. Curbs shall be replaced with like material to the shape and style of the existing curbs to sawed cut straight edge or joint. 8. Warning signs, barricades, lights, traffic control signs, and devices shall be provided, erected, and maintained at all times by the contractor to advise, warn, and protect the public. 9. Excavations shall be covered or fenced when work is not in progress. Excavations in the roadway shall be backfilled or covered with steel plates at end of work day. 10. Proper restoration shall be guaranteed by contractor for 30 days after completion. Additional inspections and any work performed by the City, including maintenance of safety devices and temporary or permanent repairs, will be charged to the contractor and may be deducted from the deposit. Inspections: 1. Work shall be inspected in accordance with City regulation and permit requirements. 2. Backfill material shall be on site and inspected by Public Works Department or Water Department when inspection is performed for work. 3. The Engineering Office shall be notified 24 hours in advance of pavement replacement at 314-822-5822. Pavement replacement shall be inspected by City or deposit will be forfeited. 4. The contractor shall notify the Engineering Office at 822-5822 to perform a final inspection. If the restoration passes the final inspection, the City shall release the deposit. If the restoration fails the final inspection, the City will perform the repairs and deduct said repairs from the deposit (minimum charge of $200). Failure to request inspection within one year shall result in loss of full deposit.
