New Florence, April 5.--W.H. Slick, aged seventy-three years, and one of New Florence’s oldest residents, died at his
home in this place early yesterday morning. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Mrs. Carl Krigger, of
New Florence; Mrs. Ada Peden, of New Orleans; Mary, of Chicago; James and Harry, of Pitcairn; Edward, of Derry, and
Hoover and Frank, at home. The funeral will be held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning, with interment in West Fairfield
Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Noble, pastor of the Methodist Church, will have charge of the services. Mr. Slick was a veteran
of the Civil War.

Mrs. Martha Jane Slick.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Martha Jane Slick were held at 1 o’clock this afternoon at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. D.B. Krigger, of New Florence, and were largely attended. The deceased was a member of the New Florence
Methodist Episcopal Church for many years. Her pastor, the Ref. Frank H. Callihan, was in charge of the services,
assisted by the Rev. C.L. Welsh, of the United Brethren Church. Burial was in the West Fairfield Cemetery. The
pallbearers were Messrs. Harvey Brantlinger, John Caldwell, William Ruffner, John Trimble, W.F. Smith and F.F. Ulerich.
Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Slick, Mrs. Walter McCall, Mrs. William Halferty and Mrs. D.M. Slick, of this city, attended the services.
The deceased was born at Ross Mountain Park, near New Florence, on December 6, 1842, and was married about 60
years to William H. Slick, a veteran of the Civil War, in which he served as a private in the Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry.
His death occurred at New Florence on April 4, 1909. Mrs. Slick’s death occurred on Monday morning following a week’s
illness. Mrs. Slick is survived by three sons and two daughters, James and Harry, of Pitcairn; Edward, at home; Mrs. Clara
Krigger, of New Florence, and Mrs. James Hitt, of New Orleans; also by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren;
two brothers and a sister, W.J. Mathews, of Pochaontas, Ark.; James T. Mathews, of Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Sarah Cox,
of New Florence.

Gregory DeWitt, of 414 Ohio street, Lorain Borough, well-known Civil War veteran and the oldest resident of that borough,
died at 2:30 o’clock yesterday morning at his home, aged 81. Death was due to ailments incidental to advanced age.
Gregory DeWitt was born at Davidsville, Somerset County, March 23, 1841, and was a son of the late Samuel and
Isabelle Haire DeWitt. The family later removed to New Florence, where Gregory DeWitt and Miss Agnes Decker were
married January 23, 1861, by the late Rev. Archie Henderson. Mr. DeWitt is survived by his widow and the following
children: Mrs. Edwin Hull, Conemaugh; Stewart S. DeWitt, John DeWitt and Leonard W. DeWitt, all of New Florence;
Mrs. Cloyd C. Orris, Seventeenth Ward; Mrs. Charles Carbaugh, Moxham; Etta Decker, of New Florence, widow of Daniel
Decker, and Mrs. Nancy Hare, of Oakhurst, Twentieth Ward. Gregory DeWitt came to Lorain about 14 years ago and had
since resided there. He was a brother of Harry DeWitt, of Vine street, and George DeWitt, of Derry. Sixty-two
grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren also survive.
Gregory DeWitt was living in New Florence at the time of the Civil War and went to Pittsburg July 17, 1863, where he
enlisted as a member of Company B, First Battalion, Pennsylvania Cavalry. He served five months as a private in his
command under Capt. George Murphy and Col. Richard Dais. Mr. DeWitt was honorably discharged in Pittsburg on
December 27, 1863.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning at the late residence, in charge of the Rev. R.E.
Penick, pastor of the Park-avenue United Brethren Church. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery near New
Florence.

MRS. AGNES DEWITT HAS PASSED AWAY
Octogenarian Was the Widow of Gregory DeWitt, Who Died in Feb., 1922 [1923 - ed.]
Mrs. Agnes Ann (Decker) DeWitt, one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, died this morning at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Charles Carbaugh, of 420 Ohio street, Lorain Borough, aged 88 years. Her death was due to a
complication of diseases.
Mrs. DeWitt was born near New Florence, Westmoreland County, in March, 1841, a daughter of Oliver and Nancy (Jones)
Decker. Her father was a boatman and worked for a long time on the Pennsylvania Canal.
Miss Decker and Gregory DeWitt were married at New Florence in January, 1861. His death occurred in February, 1922
[1923 - ed.]. Mrs. DeWitt is survived by seven children, 55 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild. The sons and daughters are: Mrs. Mary Hull, of 166 Jackson street, Conemaugh; Mrs. Etta Decker, of New
Florence; Mrs. Nana Hare, of Lorain Borough; Mrs. Cloyd Orris, of 149 View street; Mrs. Charles Carbaugh, of Ohio
street, and Stewart and Leonard DeWitt, both of New Florence.
Mrs. DeWitt was a sister of George Decker, who passed away here many years ago; William Decker, who died in New
Florence, and Oliver Decker, a Union soldier in the Civil War, who died while in Libby Prison.
Funeral services for Mrs. DeWitt will be held on Thursday afternoon at the Carbaugh home by the Rev. Dr. C.W. Winey,
pastor of the Park-avenue United Brethren Church, Moxham, with interment in the Laurel Hill Furnace Cemetery, near
New Florence.

Levi Griffith.
Word was received here this afternoon of the death of Levi Griffith at the home of Edward Ray in Jenner Township,
Somerset County, about 7 o’clock this morning, aged eighty-five years. He had been ailing for a long time. For many
years he lived in this city, his home adjoining that of Captain Patrick Graham, of the Sixth Ward, whose brother-in-law he
was.
Mr. Griffith’s wife died about six months ago and the body was brought to this city for interment in Sandyvale Cemetery.
Mr. Griffith is survived by a large family, and has many relatives in this city. The funeral will take place Friday morning, the
interment being made in the cemetery at Hopewell Church, Jenner Township, after services at 10 o’clock.

Dr. Joseph Covode, one of the oldest physicians in Somerset County, died at the Covode residence at Jenners yesterday
afternoon of general debility. Dr. Covode’s health had been failing for a long time and last Friday his condition became
alarming. Dr. Robert G. Covode, of this city, only son of the deceased, had been at his bedside for several days.
Dr. Covode was seventy-nine years of age and was a brother of the Hon. John Covode, a Congressman from
Westmoreland County, who died suddenly near Harrisburg, many years ago while on his way to Washington, D.C. Dr.
Covode lived in Johnstown a long time ago and practiced dentistry in a building where St. John’s Catholic Church now
stands. Later he took a course in medicine and located at Jenners, where he had since resided.
The deceased was married at Jenners over fifty years ago to Miss Lydia Griffith, a cousin of Mrs. Lydia Dibert, of the Sixth
Ward, and Mr. David Griffith, of the First Ward, this city. His wife survives him, with the following children: Annie, wife of
John R. Hill, of Daytona, Fla.; Minerva, wife of Attorney W.H. Ruppel, of Somerset; Miss Margaret, at home; Bertha, wife
of Edward Coffin, of Pittsburg, and Robert G. Covode, D.D.S., of the First Ward.
The funeral will take place from the Covode home on Friday afternoon and interment will be made in the United Brethren
Cemetery at Jenners, where the remains of one of the deceased’s daughters are buried. Dr. Covode was a member of
Hopewell Methodist Episcopal Church in Jenner Township, Somerset County.

Boswell, Feb. 17.–Mrs. Lydia Griffith, sixty years old, died at 5:30 o’clock this morning at her home, about two miles from
this place. She had suffered for some time with dropsy. Her husband died twenty-six years ago and the following children
survive: Carl, Edward, Jerry, and Robert Griffith, all of Johnstown; Charles and Cora, at home, and Guy, of Stanton’s
Mills. Mrs. Griffith was a member of the Hopewell Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held at an hour to be
fixed later. Undertaker L.G. Hoffman will have charge of the interment.

Mrs. Eliza Jane Griffith.
DERRY, May 3–Funeral services for Mrs. Eliza Jane Griffith, wife of Matthew S. Griffith of West Derry, will be held at 8
o’clock this evening at the T.P. Dripps home, Rev. G.M. Hartung, M.E. pastor, to officiate. Mrs. Griffith was born in
Bedford County, January 15, 1853, a daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Maurer) Stufft. In March, 1874, she married Mr.
Griffith and the couple established their home in Ligonier in 1896, moving to Derry in 1901.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Griffith is survived by two children, Mrs. Lily C. Ulerich and Geary R. Griffith, Derry, and
three sisters, Mrs. Simon Shaffer, Bedford County; Miss Julia Stufft, Somerset County, and Mrs. William Rhodes,
Stoystown. She leaves three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The body of Mrs. Griffith will be taken to the Hopewell M.E. Church in Bedford County, where further funeral services will
be held tomorrow afternoon, with interment in the Hopewell Cemetery.

BOSWELL, Sept. 23,–Mrs. Bertha Ray, 59 years of age, died yesterday after a short illness at the home of her niece, Mrs.
Robert Glessner. Mr. Ray died several years ago. The funeral services will be held at the Hopewell Methodist Episcopal
Church tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock. Undertaker Ray Seible, of Ligonier, will have charge of the interment.

Mrs. Agnes Griffith
BOLIVAR–Mrs. Agnes (Snyder) Griffith, 88, died at 2:40 o’clock yesterday afternoon at her home in West Bolivar after an
extended illness. She was born in Fairfield Twp. on Aug. 5, 1856. Surviving are eight children–Calvin and Mrs. Farella
Dougherty, both of Altoona; Cameron and Don Rolph, both at home; Adam, Jeannette; Bennett, Coraopolis; Sanford,
Landenburg, Pa., and Mrs. Dorinda Cunningham, Robinson. A daughter, Mrs. Sarah Berkey, is dead. Also surviving are
20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Griffith had been a member of the
Bolivar Methodist Church since 1886.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the home by Rev. F.L. Teets, pastor of the
Bolivar Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Fairfield Presbyterian Cemetery under the direction of R.S. Wagner,
New Florence mortician.

MRS. J.L. GRIFFITH HAS PASSED AWAY
Westmoreland Octogenarian Had Been Ill of Complication of Diseases Since Fall
Phoebe (Snyder) Griffith, widow of James L. Griffith, who had been ill of a complication of diseases, including paralysis,
for some months, died at her home in St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County, near New Florence, at an early hour
yesterday morning, aged 80 years. Mrs. Griffith was one of the oldest members of the Presbyterian Church, New
Florence, whose minister, the Rev. N.E. Koehler, will have charge of the funeral services at the Griffith homestead at 2
o’clock Saturday afternoon, with interment in the family plot in the West Fairfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Griffith was born on the Snyder estate about a mile and a half from New Florence in December, 1849, and was
identified with one of the earliest families to locate in that vicinity. Miss Snyder and James L. Griffith, a pioneer farmer in
St. Clair Township, were married near New Florence many years ago. J.L. Griffith passed away at the Griffith home six
years ago. Mrs. Griffith is survived by four sons, four daughters, 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The sons
and daughters are George and Albert Griffith of New Florence; James Griffith, jr., of Pitcairn; Chauncey Griffith, at home;
Mrs. Elizabeth Cline, of Bolivar; Mrs. Anna Kuckenbrod, of Pitcairn; Mrs. Edward May, of Somerset, and Mrs. Ida Smith, of
New Florence.

New Florence, March 2.–Matthew H. Shannon, sixty years old, died early this morning at his home above New Florence.
His death was due to pneumonia, with which he was ill about one week. Until taken sick, he was employed for many years
on the P.R.R. He is survived by his wife, six children, one brother, and one sister, Mrs. Clarke, of Morrellville.

Nancy, wife of Matthew Shannon, died at her home in New Florence at 8 o’clock Wednesday evening, after a week’s
illness, aged thirty-eight years. She is survived by her husband and nine small children, viz: Annie, aged seventeen
years; Walter, fourteen; John, twelve; Nelson, ten; Sadie, eight; Charles and Willie, five; Frank, three, and Clarence,
eleven months. The funeral took place at 10 o’clock yesterday afternoon from the New Florence United Brethren Church,
of which she was a member. Rev. J.S. Fulton conducted the obsequies, after which interment was made in the Laurelhill
Cemetery.

NEW FLORENCE, Jan. 17.–Mrs. Isabell Decker, aged 75 years, one of the oldest and best-known residents of this
community, died at her home yesterday, following a brief illness. The deceased was the widow of John Decker, who died
here about 33 years ago. She is survived by one son, Elmer, of this place. The body has been prepared for burial by
Undertaker John M. Clark. Funeral services will be held from the Brethren Church at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon and will
be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Orlidge, the pastor. Interment will be made in Laurel Hill Cemetery, near here.

Octogenarian Succumbs Less Than Month After Husband; Funeral on Saturday

NEW FLORENCE, March 7.–Mrs. Sarah Shrum, aged 80 years, died of influenza-pneumonia at her home here yesterday.
Her death followed soon after the demise of her husband, Christopher Shrum, who expired here February 8 last.
Mrs. Shrum was born near here on October 5, 1848. She is survived by these children: Mrs. Frank Wilson, of Freeport;
Mrs. John Errett, of Connellsville; Mrs. John Morris, of Carnegie; C.L. Shrum, of Robinson, and George D. and Fred
Shrum, both of New Florence. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Caldwell, of this place.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon in the local Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Laurel
Hill Cemetery.

LEWIS PEOPLES IS CALLED BY DEATH
New Florence Retired Railroader Dies in Hospital; Funeral Tomorrow
Special to The Tribune.
NEW FLORENCE, July 18.–Lewis Peoples, aged 69 years, a retired Pennsylvania Railroad engineer and one of the
town’s best-known citizens, died yesterday in the Westmoreland Hospital, at Greensburg. Death was attributed to
gangrene. He had been at the hospital about a week.
Mr. Peoples was born in New Florence. He had worked for the P.R.R. for many years before retiring in 1925. The
deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gertrude Peoples, and two daughters, Mrs. Edward Custer, of Johnstown, and
Mrs. H.D. Price, of Chicago, Ill. He also leaves one sister, Miss Laura Peoples, of Pittsburg, and three brothers–J.N.
Peoples, of Juniata; Boyd Peoples, of Derry, and George Peoples, of Pittsburg.
Funeral services will be held at the Peoples home here at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Mr.
Clendenein, pastor of the local Methodist Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the Cole Cemetery, at Derry.

John R. Haire, one of New Florence’s most esteemed citizens, died on Tuesday, in his 85 th year. Funeral services were
held Wednesday evening at the Haire home, the services being in charge of the Rev. O.T. Stewart, pastor of the United
Brethren Church, of which denomination Mr. Haire was a member for many years. Burial was made Thursday morning in
the Furnace Cemetery near New Florence.
The deceased’s wife, who has been dead for many years, was formerly Miss Margaret McDowell and was a sister of the
late Mrs. James W. Barnes, whose death occurred in this city.
Mr. Haire is survived by six children, among them Frank Haire, of Chandler street, Morrellville; 17 grandchildren, and 16
great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Haire and family, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barnes, Miss Blanche Barnes, and Miss Jennie Barnes, of this
city, were among the relatives at the funeral services.

Margaret McDowell Hair, wife of John Hair, died suddenly at 3 o’clock yesterday morning at her home in New Florence, in
her sixty-seventh year. The cause of her death was heart failure. She was a native of Westmoreland County and was a
sister of Mrs. Harriet Barnes, of No. 353 Market street, this city; Mrs. Marie Huston, of Braddock, and Robert McDowell
who has been in Chicago for some years. John Hair and Miss Margaret McDowell were married in the vicinity of New
Florence over fifty years ago. The deceased is survived by her husband and the following children: Stewart, Frank D.,
and Nelson, all married and living in New Florence; Mrs. Harriet Neil, of Irwin; Mrs. Sadie Cable, of Greensburg, and Miss
Clara Hair, at home. Mrs. Harriet Barnes left on Way Passenger this afternoon for New Florence to attend the funeral,
which will take place at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning. The remains will be laid to rest in the Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs.
Hair was a life-long member of the Methodist Church.

Frank D. Haire.
NEW FLORENCE, March 16–Frank D. Haire, aged 67, a retired employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, died
this morning at his home here, following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Haire was employed by the railroad company for 32
years, retiring two years ago.
Frank D. Haire was born here October 4, 1867, and spent his entire life in New Florence. He and Mollie [Millie - ed.] C.
Baker were married here September 20, 1889. His wife passed away in 1929.
Surviving are these children: Ethel of South Gate, Cal.; Edna of Kittanning, Mrs. Warren Hall of New Florence, David of
Seward and Robert, at home. He also leaves six grandchildren and these brothers and sisters: Stewart Haire of New
Florence, Nelson Haire of Hollidaysburg, Mrs. Clara Singer and Mrs. Sadie Riddle, both of New Florence.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at the home and will be in charge of Rev. Pearl Ludwick, pastor of
the local United Brethren Church, to be assisted by Rev. N.E. Kohler, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Interment will be
in the West Fairfield Cemetery, in charge of Ralph Wagner, local mortician.

following an illness of several months of a complication of diseases. She was born June 15, 1873. Surviving are her
husband and these children: Mrs. J.A. Cessna, of State College; L.J. Haire, of Pontiac, Mich.; Carl Haire, of
Hollidaysburg; Owen and Vernon Haire, both of New Florence. She also leaves 14 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Haire home, in charge of the Rev.
N.C. Clendenein, pastor of the New Florence Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.

M.S. Hair, Aged Citizen, Succumbs to Stroke of Paralysis.

New Florence, Oct. 27.–Matthew S. Hair, an aged and respected citizen and Tax Collector of New Florence, died at 9:30
o’clock yesterday morning, aged seventy-seven years and ten months. His death was caused by a weak heart and
paralysis, he having suffered a stroke some time ago. Mr. Hair was born and reared near this place. His pastor, the Rev.
J.B. Keirn, will conduct funeral services at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning in the United Brethren Church.

NEW FLORENCE, Nov. 2. Mrs. Anna B. Slick, aged 69, widow of Nelson Slick, died last night at the home of her son, Earl
M. Slick. Mrs. Slick suffered a stroke of paralysis last year and had since been in failing health. Her husband passed away
several years ago.

New Florence.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at the Earl M. Slick home by the Rev. Buffington, pastor of the local
United Brethren Church, and Rev. Pearl Ludwick of Youngwood, former pastor here. Interment will be in the West Fairfield
Cemetery, under the direction of R.S. Wagner, local mortician.

New Florence, Dec. 16.–Alcie Slick, a well-known railroader who lived in New Florence, was killed at 9:10 o’clock last
night at the water plug at Bolivar. His body was picked up and taken to Derry. Mr. Slick was married two years ago to Miss
Minnie Campbell, daughter of Richard Campbell. Mr. Slick had been out of employment for some time and was not on
duty when killed.

Clyde E. Haire
NEW FLORENCE–Clyde E. Haire, 72, died yesterday at his home here after an illness of a few weeks. He was a retired
employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Haire was a son of Matthew and Rachael (Penrod) Haire and was born in St.
Clair Township on January 4, 1870. He had worked as a car inspector for 42 years prior to his retirement in 1937. In
addition to his widow, Mrs. Emma (Brant) Haire, he leaves a son, Clyde Haire, New Florence, and a daughter, Mrs.
Francis Killen, New Florence. Mr. Haire was a brother of William Haire, Fairfield Township; Riley Haire and G.L. Haire,
both of St. Clair Township, and Mrs. Sarah Brant, New Florence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Haire home by Rev. W.S. Wissinger, pastor of
the New Florence United Brethren Church. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery under the direction of R.S. Wagner,
local mortician.

Mrs. Emma S. Haire
NEW FLORENCE–Mrs. Emma Serepta (Bathurst) Haire, 74, widow of Clyde C. Haire, died at 1:30 o’clock this morning at
her home here after an extended illness. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Bathurst and was born on Mar. 26,
1869. Her husband died in 1902 [1942 - ed.]. Survivors include a son, Clyde E. Haire, New Florence, and 10
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon in the New Florence United Brethren Church by Rev. W.A.
Wissinger. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery under the direction of R.S. Wagner, local mortician.

New Florence, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Friends received at the R.S. Wagner Funeral Home after 8
p.m. Tuesday. Services at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev. W.A. Wissinger and Rev. J.C.
Moses. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Johnstown, in charge of R.S. Wagner Funeral Home.

James T. Hair
BLAIRSVILLE – James Trimmel [probably “Trimble” - see note below - ed.] Hair, 82, a retired P.R.R. yardmaster at
Pittsburgh, died Monday evening at the home of his sister, Mrs. William Hamer, near here. He was a native of New
Florence, where he was born on Apr. 29, 1863, a son of James L. and Clemmezy (Caldwell) Hair. Mr. Hair, who retired 12
years ago, had resided with his sister the past three and one-half years.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Edna Little, Pittsburgh, and three sisters–Mrs. Mary Fetter [Feathers - ed.], East Freedom;
Mrs. Emma Campbell, Livermore, and Mrs. William Hamer, Blairsville R.D.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Hamer residence at 2 p.m. Thursday by Rev. A.W. Sandberg, pastor of the
Blairsville Methodist Church. Interment in the Blairsville Cemetery will be directed by the Ferguson Funeral Home,
Blairsville.
[Note: James T. Hair’s maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Trimble.]
