Arts Faculty: January 2011
Job Summary
The Arts have a high profile at DGGS. They are seen as central to the school's
educational philosophy since they develop both skills and cultural knowledge. Students
in all year groups are given the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects. The
Faculty currently provides examination courses at both GCSE and A Level in Art and
Design, Art Textiles, Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies, music and performing arts. In
June 2004 the school was awarded ArtsMark Gold, which was renewed in 2010.
The successful applicant must be able to contribute to the teaching within the team and
in all Key Stages. The ability to teach Theatre Studies to Advanced level would be an
advantage. A strong commitment to curriculum enrichment is also expected. The
school offers the Arts Award as an enrichment programme for students.
The Faculty
The school possesses a large hall with stage and gallery and a new, large Drama studio
with black-out and lighting. There are two recently built Music rooms which are well
equipped with keyboards and computers. There are three Art studios, one of which has
been refurbished to focus on textiles. Extensions to the original building have added a
Dance studio and a second performing arts space.
The school puts on several dance, drama, music, or combined Arts performances each
year. Students have regularly run workshops for local primary school children.
The school environment benefits enormously from the wide and varied display of the
students’ art work; this is exhibited throughout the school and is updated and maintained
regularly. In the summer term the examination work from Years 11, 12 and 13 is
exhibited in the Arts Evening and Fashion Show.
The Arts also form a part of our extensive curriculum enrichment programme. Students
take part in the Arts Council Arts Award scheme at Bronze and Silver levels and this is a
flourishing project using dance, drama, photography, video, art, textiles, creative writing,
sculpture, web design, music, stained glass – and even dressage! A wide range of
tuition by peripatetic teachers is on offer and we have close links with Kent Music
School. Drama, Dance, Art, Textiles and Music clubs are well attended throughout the
year.
